Nothing wrong with the 1.96 valve on a 350. Unless, you would spend a few more $ for a 2.08 valve while at the machine shop getting screw in studs and good springs.

Getting decent compression out of a 350 is gonna be more important than big valves. A 2.11 valve is not necessary even for a wild 350.

So maybe just mill the heads?

Mine would have at least screw in studs, new valves and springs. If you`re gonna spend money to mill, do em up decent.

+2

No want or need for big valves, or really any porting as any stock "D" port head is PLENTY for over 1hp/cid on a 350 build.

I'd find the smallest chamber head that I could, and cut it down to 68cc or so, deck/square the block for zero, and put an 068 size cam in it. This will get the engine up near 10 to 1 compression for optimum power on pump fuel, allow for a larger cam with less negatives in idle quality and low speed power production with the small 350cid engine.....Cliff

Yeah, the 1.96 valve on a small cam 350 with 2.78 gears will be better than the 2.11 as the air velocity will be faster, for a better fill than the larger valve at lower rpm`s and lower lifts.

Thinking about it now, I can see where a set of the `70, 16 heads would work well on that motor. That should do the compression better than the 11`s without the milling.

Also for the sake of having all its exhaust bolt holes tapped like the 68 #17's the 68 #15 off a 400 big car

If you mill the heads over .030, remember to have the intake surface milled also, some say half the head surface number, some say mill the same amount.

Zero decking the block will increase compression, and improve combustion, depending on your selection of parts...

Had a set of the '70 #16's on a 73 350. That set was 78 cc stock, I had them milled to 68 cc putting CR at 10:1 with flat tops in std bore. I was running 204/214 cam and I really liked that combo, but think that cam was a little on the small side. That combo would have liked something more like the 068 cam especially with my 4-speed and 3.36 gears.
