Gary's 62 Lemans/test and tune
Had a chance yesterday to meet Gary and see his newly acquired 62 Lemans make a few passes at Gainesville Raceway. Very nice, clean, and fast ride! Gotta love the 62.
Gary- you were having some 'issues' after half-track with maybe a miss-fire or fuel delivery; I had to leave while you were working on the car. Did you get things sorted out? Gates

Also, I should add that I met another Pontiac guy; Mitchell McCarthy who has a 68 Bird set up mainly for road racing with tubular front frame rails and a-arms, along with a rack and pinion conversion, and 4-wheel disc brakes. A real neat setup. On top of all that the car has a 6-speed and a 428 with KRE heads. I told him about this site and that there are some others of you that into the road racing deal. Might want to swap notes.

Test N Tune
Gates, it was good meeting you yesterday. Thanks for the kind words. Yea, the car appears to be having fuel delivery problems. It's surging and laying down at different points on the track. I've got a Holley Volumax electric fuel pump which should be good enough. I've since read that they have inlet screens at the pump and I'm going to check those to see if their clogged. My best pass was 9.97 at 135.54. Car had a slight surging/missing off and on down the track even on that run. I think it's easily got 9.60's in it. I'm going to shoot for the next T & T on March 26th. Hope to see you there!

Gary, I have the Holley HP125 pump which also has an inlet screen; I removed it recently and found some 'trash' in the mesh. I bought this pump used and had never looked at the screen. I run a 40 micron filter ahead of the pump so the stuff in the screen must have already been in there. I see no need to put it back now that I have the inline filter. Hopefully I can make it to the track on the 26th but I am going to be at the Midnight Madness on the 28th.

Hey Gates thanks for the mention. Nice meeting you and Gary at the T&T.
Gary, I took some pics of your car. Mind if I post them? By popular demand... Hopefully I'll have the rear end fixed and ready to go by March 26th T&T and maybe Gary will have his fuel issues worked out. Ring gear damage pic below! Would love to lineup against your red 79TA and try again! Would be a fun race! But I'm not sure if I could run ya down! (with my manual and road course tire setup) BTW I posted this yesterday (some info and pics about my car): http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=748280 -Mitchell (go by Mitch as well) |

Gates, just saw your note about the midnight madness on the 28th. I'll try to make that. Should be fun to duke it out!

Hey Mitch, glad it wasn't your trans that blew up, but that ring gear sure is ugly! And yea we could make a few side by side passes at the Midnight madness; not too often that a couple of 'old' Pontiacs get to line up together.

Hey Mitchell, good meeting you Saturday! Re: pictures of my car, sure please post them. Saw the pictures you posted of the ring n pinion, pretty nasty. I've got a 3:42 at the house if interested. It's brand new. Hope to see you on 3/26 at the next TnT.

Mitchell, thanks for posting. I was so busy with the car I never took any photos. My plan right now is to individual fuel filters for each of the two lines feeding the fuel pump. I'm also going to take apart the pump and check the screens for trash that might be resrticting fuel flow, then install a fuel pressure gauge inside the car. Hopefully thoses changes will take car of the problem

Gary, we are using the Holley #26-503 electric fuel pressure gauge in the Bird, and it was easy to install/wire and it works great. Most of the electrical gauges were out of our price range!

Gary, I hope you can get the fuel issues straightened out. I know Mike's dad had the car in the 9.20s @145 up near Buffalo. That was with a 1.33 60 foot.

Update
Just wanted to post a quick update. I made some changes to the fuel system to try and solve the fuel preesure issues I had at the last test n tune session. I rebuilt the Holley Volumax 259 pump and took the inlet screen out which were clogged with fuel cell foam and trash. In their place I installed a inline Trickflow filter in each inlet line. Fuel pressure was adjusted to 6.5 pounds feeding the Edelbrach 750 carbs.
These changes made a big difference! The car went from a surging 9.97 @ 135 at the last session to a 9.33 @142 mph this time around. It did a 1.33 60 ft time versus a 1.40 before. Now that I've got a base line, I can concentrate on some tuning and driving improvements and hopefully get a tenth or so more out of it.
