How close is too close ?
I bought a Hayden severe duty thermo coupler and a 19 1/2 fan from a member they were supposedly from a 67 GTO with A/C my 66 was an original A/C car with an A/C core support I have a Griffin radiator and an oem heavy duty cooling system fan shroud .So yesterday was nice enough to install in the car the clearance from the face of the coupler to the radiator is about 3/4 of an inch is the heat from the radiator going o effect the couplers performance do you guys think it's to close .I had a 16 high volume electric fan and it just wasn't enough I don't have 500 bones for the flexalite setup and for the life of me cant figure out how they are getting the MarkVIII fans in even if I cut the shroud down not enough room but have seen several with them installed .I am saving up for electric fans but for now the 67 setup is what I have to work with thoughts ?

Your fan blades should be about half in, half out of the shroud. It sounds like you are closer than usual, but I'd have to see a picture. If your fan blades are all the way in the shroud, it will run hotter, and you'd be better off without it. 3/4" is very close, but it won't hurt anything. It will tend to heat up the clutch easier, causing earlier clutch engagement and increased cooling, if anything. FWIW, my fan clutches are always 3" or so from the radiator core, maybe more.

Like Geeteeoguy said (and verified by looking at your picture), the fan is "too close" to the radiator. I put that in quotes because, in my opinion, that's not a bad thing unless it causes bad things. The important question is - how does it run? If your motor doesn't run hot, I wouldn't worry about it.

Fan and clutch look totally correct. Snout of water pump looks like the problem. I suspect you are using an 11 bolt pump assembly, and probably the longer one at that?
