Default My lucky day!

Yesterday I met up with an older gentleman who was selling a 69 428 block that had been machined 30 over some years back and put in storage. He told me I could have it for $350 bucks. When I met him at the storage unit he said I could have everything that was in the unit pertaining to the motor. Well when he opened the door the first thing I saw was the block wrapped in plastic along with heads and crank all wrapped in plastic. He proceeds to tell me that all the machine work was done years ago including the 62 code heads and crank was done. Then he starts pulling out box after box of parts. It turns out to be the complete motor including forged piston, timing chain and gears, lifters, cam etc. all brand new in boxes. Upon opening the other boxes were a 65 tri power intake a 66 tri power intake(still had one original carb) a torker intake a eddy p4b intake. The other boxes had everthing from a original radio to wipers arms starters alternaters all from his gto that was junk and he sold it years ago. He said he saved the motor and started the rebuild in case he bought another gto but never did and didn't want to pay for the storage unit anymore. I told him I couldn't possibly walk away with all this and just hand him $350. After several tries to get him to give me a different price. He said no a deal is a deal he was just glad I could use it. He also said just don't get in trouble with this motor as much as he did when it was in his gto. lol. Needless to say I drove home with a truck load of parts and a big smile on my face all along wondering what to do now since I had a 455 (shortblock)sitting in my garage i was planning to get rebuilt this spring.

I'll give ya $700 for all that stuff. You will double your money and then you won't have to worry about what to do with your 455!

Nice find!

Great deal! Well, you now have a block that's all ready for your 455 crank and standard 455 pistons if you don't want to run the 428 crank. Personally, I think the 428's ran better than 455's when iron heads are used. Iron heads are a little too restrictive for the 455's, not as much so with the 428's.

Im going through some of the parts although new in the box cant find much info on them
looks like old stock

sealed power/speed pro 2282p pistons .30
sealed power/speed pro cam cs199r
sealed power/speed pro ht951r lifters
speed pro timing kit 220-4107

Although I don't know much on the engine end just some basics. I'm trying to learn what I can from this and other forums. So when I go to the machine shop to do the assembly i don't just stand there saying yeah ok that sounds great!

I believe from what im reading about the 62 heads that this engine /head combo will be too much for pump gas. I also have a set of 6x-8 and 6x-4 (both need rebuild)that I was going to use on the 455.This is just a street engine that im looking to do.

So any info on this stuff would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks in advance

Yeah it was! I actually met him after buying a nos 67 gto tail panel of ebay from him back in November. I got that for $300 with a buy it now. He lives about 2 hours from me and we met up to make the transaction and also bought some mint door panels from him. After talking to him a bit he told me about the block in the storage unit.. He said he was going to South Carolina for a month or so and would call me when he got back. True to his word he called me last week and we set it up. Absolutley great guy that you could tell from talking he loved his cars and had loads of fun with them.

Cam specs from my old Speed-Pro catalog:

Adv. duration 320/320
.050 duration 230/230
Valve lift .480/.480
110 degree lobe separation
Cam series Pro-5000:
Idle Quality: Rough
Power Range: 3200-6500
Axle Ratio: 4.00 or higher
10.5:1 or higher, manual trans. or 3500 stall, headers, large 4 bbl.

Question

If he had the heads done years ago you may want to make sure you have the right valve seats in the heads for unleaded gas-----BOB

You are correct the # 62 heads on a 428, used a 15CC dished piston to lower the CR to 1.5 - 1. To much Cr for today's pump gas. The 6X-4 or 6X - 8 would make a better combination.

Good to see some decent people still in the world. You know what you have to do now right? Pay it forward.
