Default Swapping a 301to a 400

Can anyone tell me what will swap from a 81 TA 301
to a 400 for ex: distributor, starter, fly wheel, motor mounts
is the radiator big enough for a 400?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.

harmonic balancer will not. I don't believe the flywheel will either.

As long as you have a 70 or later 5 bolt block your 301 mounts will bolt to it and will let the 400 set in place of the 301.

I tend to agree as the 301 is balanced differently than the 400 and might have the smaller register at the rear of the crank. 350-455 flexplates (or flywheels) aren't all that difficult to find and replacements can be ordered through a local parts store.

I helped on this awhile back. The 301 is a shorter deck height, so you will need EVERYTHING!

The brackets will be too short or too low, the front cover will not fit as the bolts are in different spots, the pulleys will not line up as you will need a 400 balancer, the intake will not fit, the carb is a 2bbl? it might, but why?

The rad MIGHT be enough as long as you are doing a MILD build.

The auto trans will bolt up but you will need a 400 flexplate. If it is a 200 metric, baby it as it will not last.

Exhaust.... The 301 manifolds WILL bolt up, but you will need to weld the 3rd hole on the drivers side for 3 and 5. Use Felpro header gaskets and you will be fine. You will need new manifold back though.

Starter is the same. It will last as long as it starts easy.

IF you have an aluminum water pump with the cast impeller, then save that. It will work great.

Alternator will work, but you will need a new bracket. If I were you I would buy this bracket and put it on the passenger side. You'll spend a lot of money trying to find the right pulleys and brackets and eventually just buy this one. (Top of page)

Oil filter housing will work, but you might need an adapter so you dont have to remove the housing to change the filter.

Power steering...... Good luck. The brackets are an issue. Plus you are going to have to find the right pump that will fit. Then find a pulley that can be shimmed.

If I remember anything else I will post it.

Don't be discouraged. The kid I helped, talked a good game and I found out he knew nothing. Did no research at all. So I found this stuff out the hard way. Get all of the pieces FIRST..

Hope this helps,
Dave

Is it an Ac car? If it is the rad will work great.I have a 500hp plus 455 and have never had any cooling issues..use a stock clutch fan and you are good to go!My rad guy calls the rad a maxi 3 core.

The AC brackets will work as they bolt just to the head and the deck difference does not do anything. Now the Alt and PS barcketry are a different story as Dave said.
