Default 1977 Can Am

I looked at a 77 Can Am the other night and the owner "Boasted" it is one of 125 with the bench seat. The numbers doesn't matter to me but he thinks it makes the car more rare (Rare does not equal more value) with this "Fact".

It does make it more rare, but rare does not necessarily equate to more desirable.

Did he explain how he sourced the "125"? Aren't car people fun?

There is absolutely no known breakdown of production numbers of options on Can Ams, or even 403 vs. W72 numbers. So the guy is full of crap.

I agree that the bench seat is far more rare than bucket seats on a CanAm, but I also think it lowers the value because the bucket seats are more desireable. I am a former bucket seat CanAm owner and a current bench seat CanAm owner.

Is this correct for Can Am? This was posted here before, but I don't know the source.

There are some bucket and bench seat totals for 1977 A-bodies, but no breakdown by model AFAIK.

91.6% of 1977 F37s came with a console, I assume most of which would include bucket seats. I suppose you could get a buckets and a column shift, but unlikely.

I personally know of one CanAm that has bucket seats and no console. The console did not automatically come with the bucket seats, it was a different option.

In 75 I bought a 67 GTO that had a 2 bbl on it & it was original as I bought it from the lady who bought it new. I changed it as soon as I got it home.

They existed, he was just demonstrating the point that rare does not always = desirable.

FWIW, I had a Can Am about 10yrs ago that was bucket seat no console/column shift. When new, it had a factory option CB radio mounted on the trans tunnel under dash. (PHS doc'ed) CB was gone by the time I owned it. Black int. BTW.

Thanks Boss, there are options you want and dont want. I just bought a Firehawk and the 1option it had to have was the auburn rear. The 1option my can am has is the rally gauge package.

i have seen alot of ads where they boast about "rare" items on a car---like rare bench seats, rare column shift, rare small v8 or whatever. its true that these cars may have been less common than the better optioned ones, but that doesnt make them more desirable. thats why most can ams came with the buckets/console--thats what people wanted....if they wanted a straight 6 no air with man steering, they would have all come like that. lol

It's like my recently sold 74 Grand Am 4dr 4spd, Limefire Green with a green interior. Rare, yes, but rare doesn't make valuable.

It is a cool car though, to me anyway.

The 42 403 K number can't be correct. There have been more than that accounted for as still among the living.

The bucket seat, column shifter combination was more common than it should have been. People assumed that when buckets were ordered, then you automatically received a center console. Obviously, this was not the case. RPO D55 had to be ordered with the bucket seats to get the center console.

That was true in the previous generation A Bodies also. A friend of mine used to own a 70 GTO with buckets/column shift.

I agree that the 403 number seems way too low. It's one of those things that needs to be researched and verified. Here are engine totals for all 1977 A-bodies

1977 L78 V8 400 4 BBL Engine 6.6 Litre 14,530
1977 L80 V8 403 4 BBL Engine 6.6 Litre 1,754

You can see the ratio is off, so 42 is way too low.

So far, Rick is dead nuts on with his assessment in this thread. Seller is full of crap on the "1 of 125" and the 403 production number is full of crap too.

My Can Am has a black interior, buckets, and a column shift (no console). I have the paperwork to show it was built that way. Like Rick surmised, I think it was a mistake made when ordering the car...buyers thought ordering the buckets automatically got the console shifter.
