1970 Grand Prix quarter patch panels
1970 Grand prix. I need Left & Right wheel opening patch panels infront of and behind the rear wheels(all four corners) a left outer wheel lip. Left and right trunk drops would be nice but not necessary. My left rear quarter pinch weld is also gone but I can fab that. Since I don't need full panels and repop GP patches are not available what will work as patches from other body styles?? Chevelle, Monte? Close is ok because for the most part the body line is good. I could try to post pics if that helps.

To answer your question , nothing . When they say a car is A body ie GTO ,chevelle , skylark , 442 . That means the frames , floor and roofs are the same . doors , hoods , 1/4's , fenders , trunk lids will not inter change from different models .Example , a 67 GTO fender will not fit a 67 chevelle . I would look for good panels in a junk yard . Cut out more than needed . Better to have extra than not enough .

I think pics would help. If you're fairly talented with sheet metal and have some basic tools you can probably modify a similar piece. It's not that difficult.

From scratch
This is a 69 Z-28 I did last year. Simple stuff.

I was making these panels for a Desoto. Sorry for the bad picture quality. Comparing drain hole locations.
The first picture is a piece I hand formed for the opposite (passenger) side. Second pic is one of the inner rockers I made a piece for. Next one is welded in. Then painted. |

Last one
I promise.
These were the hardest to make because of the compound curve along the lower edges. I had no fancy tools other than body hammers and dollies. A few layers of cardboard on a work bench makes a great panel beater bag. My point is, give it a try. Improvise. One of the first things I learned is to start with a piece slightly larger than what you need, maybe by 1/2" on each side for larger pieces. By the time you've made some bends, you may end up shorter than what you need. It's always easier to trim down for a good fit than to add metal because you come up short. Or worse, have to make the part again. |

Great info and opinion
Thanks for the info, PY is supposed to someday come out with patches but I wanted this finished by the end of the year. I understand that the body styles are different but was hoping someone found similar curves in a readily available part. I Once used Caddy front fender outer wheel lips to make quarter lips and lower corners on a different model, that might work here too, haven't tried yet. Im an ok panel beater but it is best to ask first. someone somewhere has had to do what I suggest before. Starting with a close part and modifying it rather than from scratch. No curve to the previous repairs. Damage is relatively the same on both sides. right lip is much better than nonexistant left

guys, we are working on getting the patch panels done. I've sent samples out to be copied about 3 months ago. The reason why it took so long was because I needed to get someone to agree to do it. now that I convinced a company to make them we are about 3 months away from having them. I should have samples in about a month. keep checking the performance years website and the forms for updates.
Thanks. GP Mike |

That`s great news, Mike! Mines going in the body shop later this year and it`s gonna need a couple of them patch panels. I was hoping they`d be available by then.
