Without seeing it person, I hate to guess but it looks like you have some spalling on the lobes.

I bought this camshaft to learn how degree a cam and too check out the quality of the cam. Some of lobes look like their are offset a little bit . And I was wondering if it would affect the lifter rotation or break in. Any thoughts on this would be are appreciated. thank you

X2, What does the lifter look like???

Your last post, just popped up as mine posted.
The last batch of pic's, the cam looks like it's new???

Cam lobes of flat tappet cams are not flat on the lobe surfaces from front to back.
The lobe surface is tapered, or tilted, being higher at the back, because the surface of the lifter is convex.
The lifter contacts the cam lobe only on half the lifter, between the center of the lifter and it's outside edge.
The lifter HAS to rotate in it's bore and across the cam lobe to operate correctly, if not you lose the cam...
breaking in a flat tappet is not difficult (properly that is...)

Roller cams have none of this baloney action going on........

I don't know your degree of knowledge, just trying to be helpful.

To me that cam looks wiped out. The lobes look as though the lifters were scrubing bad on them. Looks as if that cam was run dry for a bit because of the spots on the lobes. Don't use the cam as it will eat up your lifter in a short time.

Sorry for the confusions the cam is brand new and still has some of the protectant on the lobes.

I was just wondering if is usable or not!

As for my degree of knowledge i assembled couple engine and did some cam swaping back in 80's that work out good. but that's about's it.

I'm looking to do a head & cam swap so i'm relearning.

Thank you for your replies
Mike

That's what the last summit cam (2800) I installed looked like. They don't show up all shiny. That looks normal to me. It looks kinda dusty, so try to keep things clean.

The offset on the lobe should not hurt anything since the lifter does not ride on the edge of the lobe.

Some new lobes have such thick treatment on them they look and feel pretty rough. So if new probably not a big deal.

Ok i guess i'm a little nervous about camshaft and lifter quality nowadays!

I was checking the camshaft and degreeing it in an old 400 i had on the engine stand.

I was Compare the new camshaft to a old factory camshaft which i Pull out of the old 400 and the casting look alot better on the old camshaft.

Thanks for your replies
Mike
