sweet, well all but one lobe looks good, But i dont think it will cause a problem. there is a deep groove but its in the center of the footprint of the cam follower, which i wouldnt think would cause a major issue, just wear a follower improperly and needing to replace more often. the rest of the lobe looks good. Think this would be safe?

Hard to say from a picture. If the parkerization coating has been eaten through the lobe won't be long for the world no matter what (well short of sending to a cam grinder to get polished and re-coated). I'm not sure what would cause that wear pattern, it's like something got between the cam and follower and nicked the surface of one that caused that, but that is a heck of a deep groove for a simple nick. Strange.

It's a hardness coating on the outside of the cam. It's what makes the cam dark grey. Without it the lobes wear pretty fast. Comp has a new nitrogen method, but it's not compatible with the parkerization so an old cam cannot have their new method used on it.

Red face OUCH...

1st thing that came to mind were those friggen useless assembly clips.
They have destroyed many a good engine, but I wouldn't think they would cut that deep??

Either way if anyone has them on/in their engine THROW THEM AWAY!

A cold beer says that grove is from knocking off a rocker when installing the cam & running it. (Huh, runs like heck!)
Upon looking backinside, PO said $#&*! and put the rocker back on the valve.
Did someone say SCORE?

This is a weird but true story.

On my old '67 Bird, I had what really felt like a harmonic road vibration that I just could not find. Installed a friend's new Redlines & wheels.
Went from a 3.08 open to a 3.23 posi. Switched from 2 speed auto to a Saginaw 3 speed.
Nothing helped.
I had been running an H cam that had some very minor wear on 3 lobes but I figured it was better that an E cam, right? It ran super, I probably put 15K on it.
At some point, I decided to swap the E cam back in. I was blown away, that vibration was GONE!

Yup #327 is the H cam. Nice score. I too would look for a good camshaft shop to get it repaired and reparkerized. Sorry that I do not know of one but I am tagging this for reference.

You may want to contact Jerry Woodland and ask if he knows a shop.

Too bad that the OHC crowd has not documented the shops that are good for us to go to for these special things.

So the new H cam I have is a # 9792538 and it is clearly & deeply marked H on the snout.
My reference material is buried, can someone shed some light on this one?

Per the specs I have that is not an H cam. 9792538 appears to be a ‘66-‘67 (E-D) 4BC

Thumbing through an old HPP article on the supercharged OHC, it states the cam was reground at Schneider Cams.

http://schneidercams.com

Im still in search for a more local shop, but at least this is a start.
