Default What about welding on a hood?

I'm not a welder nor do I have the supplies, so at the moment, this would be done by a professional. Having said that, is welding on a hood safe, or will it buckle the metal? This old hood seems to have thicker metal than a more recent version.

I have a '67 GTO that I cut a crude (square) hole in around 1981 (I was 16) for an original hood tach. The tach is pretty fried, plus I had the rally gauges anyway, but I was young and had the tach from a parts car I had. I was just going to put a repro tach on, but since I still have the rally gauges, I don't need the extra tach or having to explain that to everyone.

So, will that be more work than it's worth? I want it finished top and bottom to make it look like it was never there.

I've done a lot of welding and fabrication on these old cars, welding on hoods or any other large flat areas of sheet metal can be very tricky. It's not a matter of buckling but of warping from the metal shrinking as it cools.
