Default Custom Sport Steering Wheel Restoration 1970

I need to refinish my original wood wheel on my 1970 Bonneville. I have the Steering Wheel Restoration Handbook (Turpin) and the epoxy and know the general procedure, but want to know the specific stains or paints that will give me the closest to original result.

Are people using paint, or wood stain? I restored this wheel 20 years ago with pretty good results, but the color was a little off and it is ready for a redo. The 69-70 wheel does not have removable chrome spokes, but my spokes are not perfect, but pretty good. Other than stripping off all the plastic to rechrome the spokes, is there anything else I can do. They are satin chrome, not satainless, so polishing is somewhat limited.

I don't know where I saw it, maybe on this site, but somewhere I saw someone found a close match, but it was for an older GTO, I think a '66. They used a Minwax product with Walnut in the name. Hopefully I gave you enough info to search, and I am not a '70 guy so I don't know how close the finish is to a '66. Good luck, post your results to help future folks out!

Feel free to give me a call at (440) 829-7533. I have done wheels for some members on this forum. I would try cleaning the spokes with an SOS pad or fine steel wool. Many paint the spokes as this is really the only way without removing the plastic rim. A very bright silver should be pretty close and I would follow up with a clear coat. I have done these with very good results.
