Default August 10, 2009 until Now

It's been 3 years and 8 months from when I started and finally got the 63 Catalina Convertible into the paint booth last week. Now in the process of sanding and polishing. I am trying to get done by end of June. The interior is still an open shell with just a milk crate to sit on. So, I am not out of the weeds yet.

For the trunk, I used 2 quarts of Zolatone Trunk Splatter and the trunk looks spectacular.

I feel that I have established a personnel relationship with every part, fastener, clip, nut and bolt on this car.

See attached pictures. I will be putting together an alblum...when I get the time.

She should last another 50 years!

Looks good enough to eat.

Makes you wonder how those TV shows can 'restore' a car in a week, doesn't it.

WOW! Looks awesome. Is that code P, aquamarine? That's what my '63 Safari is but it sure doesn't look like yours. Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

That's great stuff, Zig.

I will be interested in picking your brain on the order of things you did that got you to this point. But a couple of ?s come to mind:

I see that the underside of the trunk is masked off...do '63 trunks (like '62s) have that thin, tan/brown 'pad' sandwiched between the decklid 'frame' and the outer skin?

Regarding that the whole car got sprayed assembled: Were all doors, fenders, etc first straightened then jambs/cowl painted, then assembled (including panel alignment) prior to receiving paint on exterior surfaces? ...Or were doors, fenders, et al not removed for this paint job?

Looking great Ziggy. Is that a cryptic message in your "Location" ?

Matt:

It would be easier to talk to you about the process. But, to make a quick answer on the painting, every panel was off the car then reassembled for the final outside finish so finish was uniform. The original frame was also repaired (in sections) with a donor frame. Both rear quarters were replaced, including inner and outer wheel wells with donor panels from a GP out of California. No filler was used in the redo.

Yes there is a material sandwiched inbetween. That material was carefully covered and protected.

Rob:

The color code is "F" for Yorktown Blue.

Dazzling. You should have warned me to put on sun glasses before I looked at it.

Spectacular car and color.

As for the "restore a car in a week" routine, my wife is convinced that everything that I do for her should and can be done in 5 minutes, so it must be true.

Got "her" home now (scary on the flat bed without having the top latched down) and still have a lot of work to do. Need to re-install the interior and decide what carburation will go back on the 421. It's been running on a 2 barrel carb set-up while in the shop and we have been using an orange crate as the driver's seat. The interior will take some time to re-install but, I also need to put the 2 x 4 back on (w/SD Valve covers - for Tom's sake!) Or, should I go with a MT Cross Ram set-up - and is there enough clearance under the hood?

See attached pics - any opinions?

Zig, great progress. Don't save it for the next guy and do whatever will make you drive and enjoy it more. SMILES per gallon ... that is what matters.
