Does it really matter at this point in time now that where over 35 years after the last true Pontiac motor came in a car ?
Only if I had an original motor with less than 30k miles on it would I not want to change the timing gears and chain real soon!! In regards to your question, late 1970 is when the did away with that poor nylon covered cam gear set up.

The gears were made from aluminum or steel but were covered with nylon to make the engine quiet. Around the 100,000 mile mark the nylon would start coming apart and eventually the chain would jump timing.

i worked for a pontiac dealership from 67 to 94, and replaced alot of those cheep timing setups. they would come apart and you had to drop the oil pan to remove the nylon from the oil pickup or they had no oil pressure on start up
