Default Obese Catalina runs 10.46 !!

After much time, trouble, tribulation and tuning I think we are finally getting a few things dialed in and running right. We got the chassis tuned awhile back and have been slow to get the right setup in our new carb. But it really came together tonight at Bradenton.
Weather was perfect and the track was hooking like a whore running a half-priced sale.

Posted a new best of 10.46/124 and a 1.39 short time !! Also had a 10.47 and a pair of 10.50s. A good night for my son at the wheel, he had a ball.

These times are with a P-Dude PUMP GAS motor and one of his custom grind cams. The nearly two ton '65 Catalina is still occasionally street driven. Love beating the crap out of his motors as I know they will take it. We'll be back at the track Friday night.

Thanks Ken for another great motor.

Jim

There's a hidden nitrous bottle in that car somewhere.

Congrats Jim, the Cat is flying!

Congratulations on great runs! I wish I had a 60' time that good. How much does your car weigh, and what was the air like (DA)?

Jim Awesome! What did u end up doing with that carb that u bought? Did u tune it like the guys on bullet were talking about? What is your suspension setup, where did u end up there? Do U guys leave off the brake? 500 stall right? 8 inch or 10 inch conv? PTC? What is shift rpms and trap rpms? It must be a Awesome feeling to know that a track hooks that hard!! Congrats!

OMT:And congrats to you on your 9-sec passes. Weather could not have been better.
DA was at about 500 feet and water grains were only 35. Nice cool and dry night for racing.
Don't get alot of those in Florida.
Thanks,
Jim

Darby:thanks for chiming in. The guys over on YB gave me a lot of good info to tune the carb [this is the one I bought from a fellow PY member]. Part of the problem we had was simply bad readings from our Air/fuel meter !! I'll have to replace it. So I tuned it old school by plug readings and sniffing the exhaust. Currently running 106 jets square with the bottom emulsion bleed plugged. At your suggestion we got a pair of QA1 double adjustables for the front along with new springs, that really helped as the Cat launches better and more consistent now. Yes, we do leave off the transbrake at 3200. Convertor is a 4000 stall PTC unit. Shifting at 6000 and trapping the same.
You need to "snow bird" down here in the fall/winter and try Bradenton out. The prep has been phenominal lately. They VHT the entire track even for TNT.
Thanks, Jim

Fantastic numbers for any pump gas deal, more so for a big car like that.
Congrats.

DarksidersTTF... Takes alot to move a yacht! Nice numbers...are you running pump gas or E85?? (cant keep track of everyone anymore been busy)

Sometimes wish I still has my 68Catalina. A 71 Catalina 2door I see every week, just sittin, keeps callin me... (the force of the Darkside I suspect) 59's are still my favorite B body though.

Jim Just once I would love to have my car's on a track that actually hooks like some of you guys get! ..The only fly paper I ever see is in the garage! I thought last time we spoke u had a 5000 stall conv? Is it still a 10 inch? What was the 1/8 mile times, and speed? I think If I remember right since u wer eon drag radials, I told u to put DA out back and the QA1 Singles up front, but either way its working it sound's like for you! You also don't seem to be picking up any more mph on top, just E.T. ,Depending on when u ran it looked like DA was under sea level around 8 pm. I am curious too what it weighs now with the glass hood, bumper, etc, bar in, your boy driving it

Haven't weighed Catalina in a long time but I'm guessing that race weight is close to 3800-3900 [driver weight:160]. Darby: Switched back to the 4000 and not sure of size, I'll take a look at the 5000 for measurement. 1/8 times/speed were 6.57/6.58s and 100 to 104 mph. Your right about picking up ET vs MPH. That goes back to our difficulty in getting the car to launch correctly but it would still MPH on the top end. DA on my handheld meter showed 400 to 500 feet at about 7pm. The low water grain count also helped alot.
Headed back out tonight to a local 1/8 mile track. Havin' fun !!

Jim

Congratulations! My only full-size Pontiac drag car was a consistent 16-second performer, so I know how impressive your times are.
