Default OS Reinstall Time

I'll see you guys is a few days. My XP is so screwed up I have to reinstall it. Can't repair it as I been trying for the last few days. So I guess now is the time to get it done and over with, seeing I can't go outside and play with the GTO. All roads here in DE are now officially closed. If you're out and get stopped it's 150.00 fine unless it's an emergency.

See yas later. TTFN.

A few words of advice. IF you plan on upgrading to Windows 7 do it asap before it's gone. Only retail stores have it as of right now. MS is no longer selling it since Windows 8 has come out.

And in my opinion Windows 8 sucks. I've played with it at our MS store in the Mall and did not like it at all. Plus the retail workers could nt answer questions I had about it and gaming. And that included the manager. LOL

BTW... I can still get on the internet while I'msaving important files to CDs and DVDs. That's a lot of work.

Good idea. I should buy a 7 upgrade license before I can't. Right now, my XP machine has to go back with XP. I have some design software that won't run past XP. There's an upgrade to a version that runs on 7, but I haven't popped the $1000 for it yet.

The problem yhou have is that I don't think Microsoft is still supporting XP with all the upgrades. I just did a reinstall on an old backup computer last month and was warned Microsoft would stop supporting it VERY soon.

I'd check that first.

Yeah, I saw that a few weeks ago when I did a reformat on yet another XP machine I have. Getting software upgrades so I can run 7 is on my Spring 2013 to-do list.

Not done yet but still can get online for now. This is a royal PITA.....

Chris, from what I understand you cannot buy an upgrade to go from XP to Windows 7. You must buy the OEM 7 version you want. The only upgrade is up from Vista. What you've found must be special.

You can upgrade from XP to Windows 8. I would check it out before you even think of it. It's not a gaming OS yet from what I was told. It's actually not even finished yet but out for sale. I wouldn't even touch it if they gave it to me.

I do remember that after doing the annoying Service Pack upgrades, I noticed Microsoft had all three service packs as zipped downloads on their website. If you're going to continue to work with XP, snagging those and putting them on CD might be a good idea.

I think you're right about not being able to go from XP to 7 via upgrade. My XP machine came standard with Vista, with a $50 option for it to come loaded with XP... which I bought. So, I do have a valid Vista license for it. Seems like I have the option of gettting a 7 license cheap for it, too. I'll have to look at my papers and see if that's the case, and if I can still take advantage of that. Heck... maybe I have a 7 license and have just forgotten about it.

But for now, I have to run XP until I come up with the bucks for a design software upgrade.

And yeah... I'm staying away from 8 for now.

Thanks for the info!

I checked at CompUSA today and found that no, there is no direct upgrade to 7 from XP. But I did find that there is a OEM of 7 Pro for 139.00. One for 32 bit and one for 64 bit.... same cost for each. And 64 bit is not necessary unless you want over 4 GBs of RAM.... and over 4 is not necessary at all either. You don't need really to buy the 299.00 version of 7 Pro that comes with the 32 and 64 bit discs. Some of these kids working at CompUSA really know their stuff. I didn't get it, but think I will soon. Dual boot of XP and 7 is how I think I'll go.

I'm just about ready to do my reinstall of XP. But, I have to find my driver/software install disc for my Asus P7P55D-E LX first. Without it i'm scrod, as the downloads I found from Asus are only upgrades.

Anyone happen to have the same motherboard, or know where I can get download of that disc? Hopefully Asus should have it but I couldn't find it of a listing for this motherboard, so I might have to give them a call and check.

I found a program online called "Driversearch" ($20) that automatically scanned your pooter and downloaded the proper drivers. It was worth it.

May I ask what design software you are using? I use AutoCad 2000 and I'm thinking of getting Chief Architect, but if it won't work with the new Windows I'm not upgrading.

I use a Sign Industry specific program made by SAi, called FlexiEXPERT. It's a vector based CAD program similar to Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD. It's not as fancy as AI, or AutoCAD... but works essentially the same way.

My 2-upgrade-behind-current version will run only on NT, 95, 98, or XP. I've tried to get it to run on Vista's and 7's XP mode, but it won't fully open. Some users say they have my version running with XP mode on 7, but I haven't had any luck making that happen.

If 8 has an XP mode, and I had a spare 7 machine, I'd upgrade to 8 to see if it had any better luck in XP mode. Right now, if you tell MS you bought a new 7 machine within the last few months, you can upgrade to 8 for $15 after a $35 rebate.

OK, thanks! I'll be getting a wide format Vinyl printer and hope it works with Win 7 or 8.

Aren't there laptops that have Win 7 or Win 8 on them out there for cheap? The prices of these machines have really come down and the features are way up.

Some as cheap as $350 and have a ton of features.

Yeah, new computers are cheap. I just bought a new desktop with 7 Pro for $350. My particular issue isn't running 7, it's my old, $1000 to upgrade, design software.
