My dad had a couple of pickup trucks in his business, a 69 Dodge 1/2 ton, slant 6, and a 71 Chevy 1/2 ton, straight 6, both with 3 on the tree. It was my job to fill them with gas, check the oil, etc. Could never figure out the Dodge, it kept dying on me when I tried to move it.

1975- '64 Bonneville wagon with a big engine, high ratio rear and 4-speed super hydramatic. My Dad set it up that way for pulling a huge camping trailer. It didn't look like much but for a beginner the gas pedal sure was touchy. The Ford wagon with the 429 that he replaced it with shortly after I got my permit was a lot easier to manage.

It wasn't a conscious decision, but that Bonnie may be why I eventually got into go-fast Pontiacs.

I went to a junkyard one day and saw a 10 yr old kid driving all over the place. His uncle was the owner and gave him his own car to drive. He's was just driving out there all on his own, unsupervised.

I received 5 tickets before I had a license. I contested and beat all but 2. One was a ticket for going 40 in a 40. I lost on a NO LEFT TURN and driving on a learner's permit with no licensed driver.

1953 Willys CJ-3A. Summers of 78-80, on our ranch in northern WY, every summer, as much as I could! I was 12 in 78 and needed a ranch vehicle to get to fields or where ever that day's work was. Man that thing would go just about anywhere! Not fast, but a goat climber she was.
4 banger flat head, 1 single barrel down draft, oil type air filter, IIRC. Floor starter, manual choke, Vacuum wiper blade (Driver side only, I think), Pretty stock except for a roll bar and a bronze colored paint job.
Boy I did find a lot of great fishing holes with that thing on the weekends!

I started on a Minnepolis-Moline tractor when I was two, then at thirteen Dad started me driving an old 67 Dodge D-300 that we had for a log truck at the time (that was 1972). I hauled my first load of logs the same day he started me driving it. Drove all kinds of tractors from time I was two until well I still run one every now and then. After the Dodge we had a 63 Ford F-500, and at 14 I learned how to shift a two speed rearend. Hauled many a load of logs on that one. Never got into my first automatic until I was 16, a Chevy Nova, drivers ed car. Since I had never driven anything except manual transmissions until then I asked the drivers ed teacher where the clutch was at. Now with my left knee the way it is I am forced to drive vehicles with automatic transmissions more, but still have a four speed in my GTO and will never change it.

I, too, started out on tractors, first a hand-clutched Model A John Deere, then a crank-start Ferguson TO20.

I took drivers ed in a '65 Ford station wagon, 352 and three-on-the-tree.

My first car (1964) was a '49 Ford four-door, flathead and three-speed with overdrive. The second (1965) was a '51 Olds 88 club coupe, 303 with Hydramatic. Third (1966) was a '56 Pontiac four-door with three-speed manual. Fourth (1969) was a '65 Mustang, C-code 289 and a C-4, which I replaced with a three-speed manual after I cooked the auto. I completed college in a '73 Dodge Dart Sport.

Many cars and trucks throughout the following 39 years...

Some of my first driving experience was gleaned behind the wheels of a 1977 Chevette and 1983 Dodge Aries... Those were pretty terrible. Then stepped-up (if you can call it that) to an '86 Dodge Caravan 4 cylinder. I don't know if it gets much worse than this lineup...

When it was time for me to look for my own car, I wanted something different... the first car I test drove was a 1969 SS396 Chevelle. From that moment, I was hooked on muscle cars.

First car I was really interested in driving was our 63 GP.
Dad said I needed to learn to drive a stick shift first.
So our second car was a beater 59 Simca with a 4 on the tree.
It had a blown headgasket and would blow about a gallon out when first started.
Refill before it warmed up and was OK for a few miles.
I got my learners permit at 14 and took driving test in a Fiat 600 (another one of Dads beater second cars).
I felt like I had cheated when I parallel parked with it. After that I finally got to drive the GP.

My first car that I bought was a 59 StarChief
$35 for the car and $300 for insurance

First time I ever drove a car was when I slipped behind the wheel of the drivers-ed car, age 16. Nervous & totally psyched at the same time.
It was a cherry red '75 Impala 350. I took my driver's license test in our '70 Ford country squire wagon. 390 4bbl with a touchy gas pedal.

It was what we had.

Right after I got my license in April, '63, my first ride was a '56 Chevy BelAir 2-door hardtop. 265, three on the tree until I got the Hurst shifter in. Wish I had that one back.

my uncle Stan's '53 Chevy truck. Even before my feet could reach the pedals, I would get to push the button to start the truck and steer it around the neighborhood. Did my DMV driving test for my license in my dad's '67 Tempest.

1st car I ever drove was a '84 Jeep. Then I basically drove a '77 C20 Chevy Pick up with a 305/HD 4spd. If I recall I was able to get my GTO to HS during my junior year.
