Wade is a good guy and as he said, he still has some. If you want one give him a call at BOP Engineering. http://www.bopengineering.com/
BOP Engineering N3651 Schmidt Rd Jefferson WI 53549-9768 Phone (920) 674-6058 Fax (920) 674-6059 All Pontiac (Frank & Bob) and BOP (Mark & Wade) were basically the first guys to bring Pontiac Forgings (with SCAT) into the country. I had some metallurgical testing done on the original forged cranks from BOP/All Pontiac and the data looked really good. Tom Vaught

So are they still manufacturing this forging or when they sell them they are all gone? I talked to Scat about a year ago they at the time said they were done with Pontiac cranks, not enough sales to justify. I talked to Crower and they said the same thing. If I purchased a large minimum, they would be interested. I was thinking of doing a large cubic inch engine as a standard, but zero support from the Pontiac community thus far. So, we must do the really big ones with a billet. We can currently do around 600 cubic inches with a standard forging.
I was trying to come up with a standard large cubic inch engine to use as a price point to run economically with the Chevy, Ford and Mopar guys. Since All Pontiac discontinued the tall deck blocks due to lack of support, then it looks like 600 cubic inches is it. Most big Chevys/Ford standard is a 640 CID. Sucking wind again. We can do the 640, but it takes a billet crank. How distressing.

A year or 2 I asked if people would be interested in a 4.375 stroke crank. Response was pretty good. SoI had 20 made. I sold 1 so far. The people that said they would buy them were full of it! It's not like I don't have pistons. Pistons are UNDER $600.

Sounds like that's what people were saying about the 4.375.

Depends largely on how much rpm you are willing to turn IMO. 2 bolt mains really isnt the issue. Its the material(or lack of) in the bulkheads and lack of support between the lifter bores. Factory style straight 4 bolt puts outer bolts right into thin section of the bulkhead. If it had been smaller bolt it might be better but, as is, it actually adds a weakness. Studded 2 bolt is stronger than straight 4 bolt.

I ended up with 4's since the 3.75's were extinct and anything shorter was exotic. Looks like 4's are an endangered species now as well. The 4.375 looks like it's be a good stroke for a big and square drag engine. |

I had a 4" billet Ohio made when Dude had some billets done before the forged actually came out. The forged had been said to be "coming" for 1 year. I think the 4" is a good street/strip size for alot of motors and should be easier to hook than a larger 455/462. It'll go under my RAIV heads.

All the killer NHRA Super Stock engines run the 4 inch stroke crank. So I guess no one is currently making them?

The Future of Forgings ?????
Everyone,
I had heard about the demise of the 4" Stroke Forgings a while back and spread the word to friends and customers. Although nobody bought one, except for me. My question is this: Are forgings of all stroke lengths drying up? Are any more forgings actually being produced? Is the current availability of select stroke lengths only due to the number of "In-Stock" pieces? Who knows what? Larry S. http://www.precisionautomotivespecialists.com |

Personally I like the ci combo's the 3.75-4" stroke cranks offer. Think they need a shorter deck block to take full advantage though.
None the less the 3.75" -4.0" strokes are still great to work with especially for stock block combo's. Most of us arent building pro-stock or super stock level motors. Yeah the longer strokes have their place too, but I've never been a big fan of undersquare motors. Lynn you are so right... the 4" crank seems like the killer combo to me too. Wonder how it would do with a big bore aftermarket block? Perhaps short deck as well. Last edited by BruceWilkie; 06-28-2012 at 07:26 PM. |

Has anyone actually talked to Chance at SGI Cranks about availability of Forged Cranks?
Word I am hearing is that cranks for Pontiacs is a non issue. Tom Vaught
