Default Rear gear help

Ok so from my on the ground check of my rear end ration it looks like I have around a 3.90 in my '67 auto 400.

Thats a little steep for what I want the car to be. So I have been looking at swapping to something like a 3.08 but from what I have read my carrier might be the wrong series for this. From what I have figured I have a series 3 carrier and need a series 2, is this correct?

Thanks

I had a 3:08 and went to a 3:55 without a carrier change.

With the stock 8.2 ten bolt rear end, you can go all the way down to a 3.36 gear, which is what I did in my '65. If you want to go to a 3.32 or 3.08, yes, you need a different carrier. A 3.36 is a HUGE improvement on the street over a 3.90....you're talking cruising 70mph at 3,000 rpm instead of 55mph. I recently swapped out the 3.36 in my '67 with a 2.56, and it's an auto with the 400, too. I love it: quiet, fast, and great gas mileage. It will cruise a bit over 90 at 3000 rpm.

Your posts are what have me looking.

Now I just need to find some gears and a carrier.
