its was orginally made for the izusu med duty truck line. then went in the Pickups supposed to make good power and good longevity compared to a powerstroke.

Nope - it was the fine GM (Pontiac) 2.5L (151") pushrod "Iron Duke".

Another fine GM 4 cyl. . .

Bean counters thought you can make a good block with little to no nickel in it. the 301 Pontiac was the same way, no nickel content and the iron was soft and wore out prematurely. I have taken apart 301 with 60,000 miles that you couldn't get the pistons out without a ridge reamer because the blocks were so soft. you could probaly put .010 over pistons in without boring the block.

By the same token in a well taken care of Pontiac 400 with over 100,000 miles on it there is just a carbon ridge and usually less than 2-3 thousandths wear on the cylinders.
Well said, Brad.

the GM Duramax is assembled just a little west of where I live around Dayton, I have been inside the buildings where the assemble the engines. From what I understand it was a joint design venture between Isuzu and GM, GM however builds the engines.

Yep - that engine actually saw it's first installation in a few Chevy IIs back in early 60's.

Besides GM resurrecting it for use in MILLIONS of FWD cars in the 80's to early 90's, it was also used in some smaller I/O marine applications, believe it or not.

I thought that also, Brad, until I read the article I linked in post #12. Currently 60% GM owned and 40% Isuzu owned.

I had to re-ring it once and when I took it back apart all the end gaps were lined up same as they were before I re-ringed it. This was one of the engines that really ruined GMs name and reputation and drove long time loyal customers to foreign brands.

Lloyd, as the article points out the plant is well laid out and reminds me of the honda engine plant over in Anna OH. Maybe Isuzu has more to do with it than I thought, not sure but it is really clean for a foundry type plant same as honda's is.

I worked in the foundry at GE in Erie Pa. where they used to make the GE locomotive engines and it was anything but clean, just a dirty dusty foundry. I drove a forklift there in the early 70s there and used to have to take a shower before I left work due to all the dust I'd get on me just being in the building.

Nissan 300 ZX dual over head cam engine. And they are a PITA to change the engine out after the timing belt breaks.

Lets not forget the 348/409. Ed Cole allowed us to have the small block Chevy...

but he had some flops like the 348/409. Many here revere the engine, but it really wasn't that great, and he let the corvair come to life....geez

Thanks for setting me straight on that Lloyd! Maybe it was my 83 Buick Electra that had the Olds engine in it.....307 or something like that??? However, that engine never gave me any problems!

Everything Lloyd Tx mentioned plus Toyota 2.5/3.0 V6, Nissan 2.5, Jaguar V8, Ford 4.0 SOHC, Ford Escort 1.4,1.6, Ford 351m/400m, Chrysler 2.0, 2.4 (actually Mitsubishi), VW 1.6/1.7, Buick "odd fire" 225/231 V6, Chevrolet 200,229 V6, Chevrolet 3.4 DOHC. As a matter of fact, any engine "converted" to OHC from an OHV layout.
