Default Why does milk cost so much in PA ???

In the last week I have spoke to 2 friends one lives in Texas, & the other in Arizona. They are both paying about $2.30 for a gallon of milk. Why are we here in PA paying about $4.00 a gallon???

Ever notice (in PA) in the ads they sometimes print that they charge for milk the lowest prices available by law... that's what happens when the govt. is involved in setting prices, we pay more than any surrounding states. PA govt. has also got the distinction of being able to loose money running liquor stores, while charging higher prices than available in NY (Privately run) stores, AND less variety!

Question

It's around $2.19 here. It's routine to see two gallons on sale for $4.

But then there are a lot of dairy farms in my area.

The PA milk marketing board sets the prices in PA. I lived in PA most of my life and I couldn't give you the vaguest idea of how they arrive at the pricing. Must be some top secret formula or else they just pick a number out of the sky...................

I looked over this website and still don't have a clue about how they arrive at retail pricing:http://www.mmb.state.pa.us/portal/se...y/mb_home/4741

$4.99 to $8.99 a gallon in Hawaii. But milk tastes soooooooo much better when you're drinking it in Hawaii.

That's because it's flown in and Hawaii set the shelf life ridiculously short for the dairy farmers on the big island.

Yeah, I know. The tourist dollar has screwed it for the native Hawaiians.

One of the largest cattle ranches in the U.S is actually on the big island of Hawaii - the Parker Ranch.

In the 1980's, Hawaii produced all it's own milk. But competing with low priced imported milk from the U.S. mainland forced many Hawaian dairies out of business. In the early to mid 90's Hawaii was importing 55% of it's milk. Currently they import about 80%.

"The majority of the population of this state is drinking double-pasteurized, imported milk that is eight days old," said Ben Sadeghi, whose Ahualoa Dairy went out of business two years ago. "Wake up before you have no dairies left in Hawaii."

The big island of Hawaii is still producing 100% of it's own milk and shipping the excess to Maui. The big island has the lowest milk prices in the state.

Fort Worth has been having a milk price war for about 4 years now. We have been buying milk for 99 cents a gallon. Recently one store has raised it to $1.28. I feel this is price gouging.

Here's a USDA paper titled "Milk Pricing in the United States": http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/aib761/aib761.pdf Looks like good bedtime reading. I browsed through it quickly and it does say that Pennsylvania has state pricing control on milk. Not all states do that.

You're comparing apples to oranges: TX and AZ are ghetto ecomonies. You, like me, don't live in a ghetto ecomony.
