Default Still no build sheet, but did find...

This. Can anyone tell me what these codes stand for? I found it behind the rear of the back seat attached to the springs. Its for my 65 Cat Ventura 4 spd. I assume that the M20 is for the trans.

I had the same type of thing behind my rear seat in my 64 Catalina. I remember that piece of paper well. I had the seats out of the car for close to 10 years, and when I went to put them back in, that paper was gone. No idea where it went.

No idea what those numbers meant, or at what point it was tucked up in there.

593 is probably the build sequence number (the last three digits of some bigger number, like 234593).

Mike's got the body style, and the rest are RPO codes for option content that they cared about in that area, probably the seat cushion room if you found that in the seat.

Which plant was your car built in?

Default Build codes

I also had the same type slip of roll paper with various option and color trim codes written in pen for my 1966 Bonneville Convt. My guess is someone did this to assist the assembly line workers with the items needed to build it.

Last year I had to rebuild the six way power seat unit that quit and while pulling out those components I found the original delivery slip from Anchor Motor Freight. My guess is the driver after unloading this car took the pink delivery slip folded it up and stuffed it up in the springs. The receipt had the receiving dealership name on it that I already knew but the form also listed the date picked up and time it was to leave the holding yard in Linden, NJ.

Right - cars were not built in VIN order in most plants; they were assigned a build sequence number (or manifest number) which was a totally separate and unrelated number and which incremented up by one for each car produced. The VIN does not increment up by one for each car produced, because they are different for the various brands (Chevy vs Pontiac vs Olds) and can also start with different numbers depending on engine type.

As a result I would not expect to find your VIN ends in 593 except as an amazing coincidence.



My truck was "number 87", even though my VIN ends in 388. It would have been followed by build sequence number 88, but the VIN of the vehicle behind it could have been anything (Chevrolet or GMC):







This sequence number would be written on any sub-assembly that was conveyed to the main line from a remote location in the plant, like rear axles, tire/wheel assemblies or seats, and that needed to remain in build order.

Not sure if i follow? If on the truck, i would assume that there are several people in differant departments that write these numbers vs just one guy, if you are talking about the sheet i found behind the rear seat, than i am am not sure?

The numbers would have been added by different people in different areas of the plant. It would be just to make sure the part built went on the correct car according to option, color, ect. In my plant for example the doors come off and get built up then get put back on. The seq # is so it goes back on the correct car. The seq # doesn't match the body# or the vin#, they are all separate. You should be able to find some numbers marked somewhere if it has never been apart or repainted.
