Default "Taps" unlike I've heard before!

I'll copy and paste from an email I received today from a member of the Marine Corp Presidents band. (A horn player himself)

I have heard this many times never like this. NEVER knew there was more to it!

Unbelievably beautiful, makes tears come to your eyes and the hair stand up on the back of your neck!

This is something beautiful to hear.

Canada Free Press:

Amazingly beautiful .. Melissa Venema, age 13, is the trumpet soloist.

The conductor of the orchestra is Andre Rieu from Holland. The young lady, her trumpet and her rendition of TAPS makes your hair stand on end.

Many of you may never have heard taps played in its entirety, for all of the men & women that have died for you to have the freedom you have in America. This is an opportunity you won't want to miss and I guarantee you'll never forget

Here is Taps played in its entirety. The Original version of Taps was called Last Post, and was written by Daniel Butterfield in 1801. It was rather lengthy and formal, as you will hear in this clip, so in 1862 it was shortened to 24 notes and re-named Taps. Melissa Venema is playing it on a trumpet whereby the original was played on a bugle.

That is not the original Taps. As it is played in the video, that was written in the 1960's. Also, Butterfield was born in 1831. 30 years after it was supposedly written as cited in the email you received.

So Bob, who wrote or arranged it like that in the 1960's?

Guess the Canadian Press that was included in the forward was a bit off on some facts.

Some info.

Thanks Jim. That was amazing and so beautiful.

I've still got goose bumps from listenening to her play. The only thing that would or could have made it any better would be someone singing the words to Taps while she played.

Also found it on YouTube.......

If you have the YouTube video downloader you can save it to your computer.

Even tho it's not a valid reinterpretation of Taps, you must admit it is still a beautiful piece. I do not think it was intended to do harm to Taps, but a rendition with love and soul from a very talented young lady.

I got it FROM a MARINE in the Marine Corps Presidents Band who wanted me to HEAR the rendition.
I did NOT think I had to share his entire E-Mail so I cut and pasted. I dont make habit of fact checking every item included in a forward.

My main thought was to share the rendition. Sorry Bob, if you dont like it or were offended that incorrect info was included. Wish what you typed didnt come across so rudely. Hopefully this doesnt come across the same.

I'm sorry if you misconstrued what I typed as being rude. That was not the intent. It was meant to be concise and to correct two unfortunate errors being passed on as factual.
The girl can play very well. It's not common to hear someone so young play a trumpet that well. I kind of wish the orchestra wasn't there so you could only her.

Bruce, I wouldn't worry about it. So what if it's a sidestep from the original Taps, it's still a beautiful piece of music. And I also understand what Bob meant, he's right too. It's not the original correct US Military Taps. Both are beautiful pieces in their own right. Both will bring a tear to your eye and goose bumps more profound than anything else played.... except our National Anthem.
