Default Tachometer does not work

in my 1976 trans am.....so I put in a new printed circuit but it did not help. I have a spare pontiac 8000 rpm tach and I was wondering if I can unplug the back of the bad tach and take the plug and connect it to the spare tach to see if it works while holding it in my hand

or

do I have to fully attach the spare tach in the gauge panel plug it in and also have it connected to the printed circuit....

thanks

lee

If you make the necessary connections to the tach, regardless of how, it will work.

The necessary connections are probably 12V power, ground, and tach signal (from distributor). You can use jumpers with alligator clips perhaps.
