How can there be a 50th anniversary t/a when the first was built 42 years ago?

It commemorates 50 years of Pontiac not the Trans Am.

So it was a 76 T/A? Did they even have 455s in 76 T/As?.

PMD 1926-1976= 50 years

A special gold 1976 Grand Prix & black/gold Trans Am were made to commemorate the anniversary.

I know someone who owns a '76 50th anniversary T/A...and no they were not all 4-speeds. Some were built with 400's and some with 455's. All 455's got auto's but the 400's you had a choice of auto or 4-speed.

Purportedly 2400 were built...all were special editions (with the black paint and gold accents...which some later call the "bandit package" because the car Burt Reynolds used in Smokey' had the special edition trim package). 643 were built with Hurst T-tops, and the remainder were hard tops. All of them were supposed to get T-tops but they discontinued them (purportedly) into the production run due to leakage issues, so only the first 643 got T-tops (purportedly).

These cars can be commonly identified by the "Y82" on the cowl tag.

Actually, all TA 455s came with 4-speeds in 1976.

There were 2,590 50th Anniv. TAs built in total.
1,628 400 w/o T-tops (no tranny breakdown)
319 455 w/o T-tops (all 4-speeds)
533 400 with T-tops (no tranny breakdown)
110 455 with T-tops (all 4-speeds)

In 75-76 all 455 birds were 4 sp. Remember 75 was the first year for the "cat" hump on the passenger side floor, so no more th400's. I know where a 75 455 4sp is setting in the woods rotting with honeycombs.

And why aren't you out there with a bush hog digging it out?

My buddies car was for sale, don't know if he still has it or not. It needed a total resto' however.

Yep, Pontiac couldn't bring themselves to mate the 455 with the TH-350.

I believe there was 7099 76 455 TA's built with the 455/4spd, I don't think this figure includes the SE cars.

Too bad GM couldn't get off their collective Butts and come up with a 700R4 type trans that would hold up on a 455. If the 70s T/As got over 20 miles per gallon the true muscle cars might not have died.

LOL...what? All manufacturers were struggling with getting engines to meet federal government mandated emissions standards, which is what killed the so-called "musclecar engines"...not their lack of fuel economy.
