| Fall 2010 | The Pontiac Journal - A Performance Years Newsletter | Volume 8 - Issue 2 | | WELCOME TO ANOTHER PONTIAC JOURNAL | The world continues to turn, the seasons continue to change, engines get rebuilt, seats get re-upholstered and Performance Years provides you with another issue of the Pontiac Journal to read. This issue arrives at the tail end of the 2010 election season and Don Keefe has some insight we should all be paying attention to, for the future of the classic Pontiac hobby. We, at Performance Years, are getting more excited about our inaugural PY OpenHouse, learn about the latest additions to the event below. New reproductions continue to spring into availability, have a look at what's new and what's not far away. All this and more awaits you below.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue and if you have any comments, questions, articles or article ideas, please feel free to send us a note at Pontiacjournal@performanceyears.com.
The Pontiac Journal Staff | If you do some quick math, you'll realize June 2002 was 8 years ago. Why is June 2002 important, you ask. That was the last time Performance Years released a Fullsize Pontiac catalog.
In the years immediately before and after the release of that catalog, we at Performance Years noticed an alarming trend. Each year there were many more discontinued products for our Fullsize Pontiac catalog than there were new products. When it came time to release a new Fullsize Pontiac catalog in 2003, we discovered that there weren't enough new products to warrant the time and expense a new catalog requires. Performance Years decided to direct our Big Car customers to our website where they could get more accurate and up to date information. And so, Performance Years' Fullsize Pontiac catalog was shelved, doomed to wait for "better times".
Now fast forward with me, to the summer of 2009. While working on the first ever Performance Years G-body Grand Prix catalog, we noticed that so many of the products we had been researching also fit several Big Pontiac models. Of course, we noted the cross-model products on our website so the Big Car customers became aware of them. But it became more and more apparent that these products would reach more people, if we had a catalog to hand out. It seems that the recent wave of new reproductions have created those "better times" that our Fullsize Pontiac catalog had been waiting for.
In late 2009 it was decided that once all of the other Performance Years catalogs were updated, work would start on the re-introduction of the Fullsize Pontiac catalog. We are currently several months into the research stage. There have been a great number of changes to what is available since 2002 so we want to make sure we include as much as possible and get it right.
We have begun compiling the pages for this new Fullsize Pontiac catalog. We are giving this catalog the same upgrades that we've given all of our catalogs. It will be in full color and as packed with colorful pictures and diagrams as we can make it. We are adding extended descriptions and product details everywhere it's appropriate. The organization is being re-thought and all products re-indexed to allow customers to find what they want more easily. There is a lot of effort being put into this new catalog and we are confident our customers will be impressed.
Ideally, we would love to have this catalog ready to hand to our Big Car customers tomorrow. But with all the work still left to be completed, it will most likely be 2011 before it is completed to our satisfaction. Anyone interested in a print copy of this catalog can add their name to our list HERE. We also recommend that you pay attention to the PY Stuff section of the PY Forums for updates on this catalog and many of the desirable new reproductions that will be in it.
Our goal is always to produce catalogs that allow our customers to find and order items they need as conveniently as possible. We are striving to improve our catalogs' quality with each new volume. A huge factor we take into account with each new catalog is the feedback we get from our customers. If you have a chance, send us your ideas and comments. Your comments can help to make the next volume, that much better.
| PY OVERSTOCK DISCOUNTS CONTINUE |
PY OVERSTOCK SALE With new products continuing to become available each week, Performance Years still needs to sell a good portion of our overstock or discontinued products. All of the products that have been discounted are listed on our online ordering system. You can use these links to go directly to the lists:

| AN OUTSIDER'S PERSPECTIVE | by Steve Craig | I would like to share a little experience I had a few months ago, that shed some light on my own view into the Pontiac hobby. I hope it will have some meaning for you, as well.
I have a neighbor, a generally nice and quiet woman, who lives by herself now that her only son has grown up and gotten married. We'll talk sometimes when our paths cross and that's where this story takes place. She was returning home and I was heading out when we stopped to say "Hello" and catch up on random things (lawn care, neighborhood kids misbehaving, etc...). She knew that I did computer work for a place that sold Pontiac parts. So in our conversation, she asked me...

| ANNOUNCING THE 1ST ANNUAL PY OPENHOUSE | Hopefully by now this announcement isn't a complete surprise for anyone. We've had advertisements running on the PY Forums for a few months now and there have already been threads discussing this event. But for those of you who haven't already gotten wind, Performance Years is having it's first annual Open House in 2011. The weekend of May 20-22, 2011, to be more specific. The new facility that we moved into this past year is much more spacious than any we've had previously and that extra space allows us to host a full event, right at our home base.
The Performance Years Open House will span that Friday, Saturday and Sunday in mid-May. We want to encourage as many people to attend as much of the event as they can. We already have so many plans for our Open House that there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.
We decided to kick off the event on Friday May 20th, but wanted to keep is casual. We're inviting everyone who can get an early start on the weekend to join us at our corporate headquarters in Hatfield, PA for a cruise in. We expect loads of people will drive and park their cars onto our lot and spend the afternoon hanging out with us. Later on in the evening, we've arranged a casual cruise of the area. The final stop on the cruise is Molly Macguire's Irish Pub, a great local restaurant, where we've scheduled a large sitting area for all of the cruiser's to congrigate and share a meal.
Saturday, May 21st is when the event really kicks into gear. We have two popular-vote car shows as the main features of the day. Along with the car shows we will be offering tours of our new facility. We've invited several vendors to sell food and other goods. We are in the process of scheduling an automobilia auction in the afternoon. Plus we have a number of other fun events and contests we plan on offering to the attendees.
Once the excitement of the Saturday afternoon has died down, we're inviting all PY Forums members in attendance to the first annual PY Forums Members Re-union BBQ. We hope to get a chance to meet and mingle with lots of PY Forums members and their families, over what will surely be an impressive spread of food and drink. Judging by our similar BBQs at the Norwalk Nationals and PY Pontiacs in the Park, this BBQ will be an excellent time with a croud of great Pontiac lovin' people.
Plus, as if all of that wasn't enough, we've managed to schedule an All Pontiac race day on Sunday, May 22nd at Maple Grove Raceway (less then 1 hour East of PY's Facilities). This race day is the resurrection of a great event that died out a few years ago, known as Pontiacs at the Grove. With the experienced direction of Jim Zeek, we are welcoming Pontiacs "Back to the Grove!" In addition to the races, Jim is planning a car show and swap meet at the Sunday event.
Performance Years is doing our best to host an excitement packed weekend for everyone who can attend. Wheither you like car shows, races, BBQs, hanging out with great Pontiac people or all of the above, you're guaranteed to get all of your favorites at PY's First Annual Open House. Come with your ride, with your family, with your buddies or just with yourself.
| | | | Are We Really Being Legislated Out of Existence? | by Don Keefe | With a very heated political atmosphere raging in this country at the moment, it is no surprise that most of Source Interlink Media’s enthusiast automotive titles recently ran similar cover headlines, all accompanied with a huge red the international “Do Not” graphic in with the same basic message- Is the government trying to outlaw the automotive hobby?
Legislation like this has been sponsored before, particularly in the late 1970s. Today, we are facing...

| MAXIMIZE WATER PUMP EFFICIENCY | by Mike Spizziri | My 1969 GTO always ran hot. And by hot, I mean 200-210 degrees while driving 80MPH when the temp outside was in the 40's. The last time I drove it during the day, it rose to 220 degrees and it was only 80 degrees outside. Not good.
Pulled the water pump and sure enough, it had a stamped steel impeller. Went to Auto Zone and got one with a cast impeller. Even though the stamped impeller was 4" in diameter versus the cast impeller being only 3", I drove it home with a 55 degree outside temp, and the gauge never went over 180, whether on the freeway or the street.
Swapping in the stamped impeller was a huge help but not the only way I've improved my cooling system. The water pump...

Performance Years and Pypes Exhaust has extended our Saturday Business Hours!
Starting this past June, the Performance Years and Pypes Exhaust showroom has been open on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00PM (EST). There has also been staff on hand to answer phone calls and emails during those hours. Originally we expected to offer these Saturday hours only during the Summer, but the steady stream of customers calling and stopping by has prompted us to extend our Saturday hours until the Christmas holiday. These new Saturday hours resume in Mid-February as most of you begin to gear up for the Spring.
Already, these new hours have made it easier for many customers to get better customer service and technical assistance. Local customers can come in to place or pickup orders on Saturdays. Plus, non-local customers have been able to call or email to get immediate technical help or customer service.
Our new showroom has quickly filling up with products and automobilia. Currently there is a beautiful 1967 GTO on display inside the showroom. We invite anyone in the area to drop by during any of our office hours to have a look. You can also place orders, inspect in-stock products and ask technical questions. You can even get caught up watching the movies we have playing on showroom plasma screens. Right now we have Smokey & The Bandit, Two Lane Blacktop, Gone in 60 Seconds, American Graffiti and a few others playing on our big screens.
We hope you will find these New Saturday Hours an added convenience to your customer experience.
Thank You The Performance Years & Pypes Exhaust Staff

| PY OFFERS EASY DISCOUNTS TO BODY & RESTO SHOPS | | The Pontiac restoration hobby is the life blood of parts vendors like Performance Years. And even with all the do-it-yourselfers who like getting under the hood and getting things done with their own two hands, professional body and restoration shops are a signifigant part of the hobby. Performance Years wants to help the smaller body & restoration shops, who may not have back-to-back Pontiac projects, get better pricing on the Pontiac parts they need.
So Performance Years is offering body and restoration shops immediate discounts with no required buy-in. These shops can get minimum discounts of 10% off everything that we carry plus deeper discounts on PY-made products. Then, with larger volume orders, the discounts continue to grow. It couldn't be any easier.
The main goal of this offer is to allow smaller body and restoration shops to keep their prices low (or allow more room for price negotiation). That should mean that more projects are likely to get started and more Pontiacs stay on or return to the road (or track). The bottom line is that the more Pontiacs that stay active, the stronger the hobby will be in the future. The continuation of a strong Pontiac hobby is the ultimate goal of all the Pont-aholics at Performance Years, on both the commercial and personal levels.

Some of you may only read one or two of the Technical sections because you are only interested in the technical threads that pertain to your own car(s). | WHEN A DISCOUNT ISN'T REALLY A DISCOUNT | | We all know that money doesn't grow on trees. Each of us works for what we have and beacuse of that, are cautious about where we spend it. Anyone will tell you that it's always better to shop around for the best deal, otherwise you run the risk of paying more than you have to. Of course, the classic car parts industry is no different.
The employees at Performance Years are nearly all classic car enthusiasts and because of that, we are on the mailing lists of many parts companies. We often get copies of the emails and flyers that promote "Huge", "Seasonal" or "Annual sales" from other parts suppliers. These are the reason we want to remind everyone that a "sale" is only worthwhile if the prices drop low enought to beat all the compeditors. A 10% sale doesn't mean much if the company is 20% more expensive then the competition.
At Performance Years, besides the customer service that we pride ourselves on, we work hard to offer our customers the best prices we can. Our pricing is not based on what we expect the market will bear but what the products and our overhead costs us. Being automotive hobbiests ourselves, we know the impact offering a quality product at a reasonable price can have on the entire hobby. Our ultimate goal is to keep the classic automotive hobby going as long and strong as possible
Of course there will be situations where one of our compeditors sales will bring the price of an item below our everyday low pricing. It is for that exact situation that we setup our price matching policy. As long as the quality of the product is the same, we will match or beat any price advertised by our compeditors.
It is also worth reminding everyone that discounts are available on nearly every order places with us, no matter how small. We offer volume discounts on every order over $500 and the larger the order, the greater the discount. You can get even better discounts if you pay with cash, a check or money order, instead of a credit card or Paypal. We also offer a 2% discount off every order mailed, faxed or placed online. With that much discounting available, added to our everyday low prices, it's a rare occasion when our competition can offer a lower price.
We'd like to encourage everyone to compare the prices of the different parts vendors before purchasing. A little effort can save you a few dollars or a few hundred dollars on your hobby project. Also remember that a "Huge Sale on Everything" is less likely to offer you a great deal and more likely to be a gimmick to get your attention and hard earned money.
