Default Formula hood clearance problem

At the moment, I have a 76 formula hood on my 76 TA. With an edelbrock performer intake and holley carb bolted to the engine, I have no clearance for the aftermarket aircleaner. Does anyone know how much of a dropbase I would need to get? Or possibly a good way to measure it? Thanks!

You will need the factory air cleaner base. I don't think an aftermarket will work. PY and ames sell the formula ram air air cleaner base, that would work. May need to modify for a holley carb though.

I had performer / 750 holley like you and you will need the shortest air cleaner element you can find at parts store for open element aftermarket, no wing nut, flat nut. You will not use factory cleaner with holley. I went rochester and factory ram air pan and it all fits well now, can use wing nut. with your set up it must all be dialed in to the nats hair, my flat nut rubbed hood until I found right height element.

You're exactly right. Tried a 2" drop with my 1 3/4 air filter and it JUSTclears the hood with a flat nut. It actually rubs when I brake torque it but for now it will work!

I have a Moroso 2" drop on my set up, ended up cutting the ears off of the wingnut and cutting the bolt down a little. It works perfit now... been running it like that for 5 years now

I had the EXACT same set up on my 75 bird with a steel 76 form hood, I used a Moroso drop base bottom, with a 2.25" tall filter and
a Mr. Gasket aircleaner Lid, I belive it was called the "Low Rider" it had a smooth flat top, not sure if its made anymore.
http://www.vichubbard.com/auto-part-...r-cleaner.html

The Mr. Gasket base was too tall for the holley so I used the moroso drop bottom.
It did not rub anymore. It took some trial & error to get to that set up.
I actually had room to use a thin street rod style billit wing nut with 1/8" hood clearance.

It was a little air flow restrictive and I had some trouble getting the secondarys to open quickly on a 650 Vac secandary Holley carb.
I swapped to an Edelbrock AFB style 600cfm which is too small, I'm going to go back to a Q-Jet soon with the glass 75 form hood.

You can measure the clearance with playdough or wadded up aluminum foil placed on arround on top of the aircleaner lid, after you open the hood you can measure the thickness.

One thought is those Holley street rod air cleaners that have a plenum & 2 filters on either side of the carb
http://www.holley.com/120-149.asp
It might look cool with the 2 hood scoops

(I might still have my old, lid I have since swapped to an edelbrock elite aircleaner, The chrome is scratched up a bit but If you need a lid bad I'll sell it PM me)

Does the 76 steel formula hood have less clearance than an earlier glass formula hood?
I know my 73 formula with a performer and edelbrock carb fits (barely), but will the same combo work on the steel formula hood?

They should be about the same,
I actually had slightly (1/8") more clearance with my steel 76 hood
before I switched to the glass 75 one with no other changes.

Bad Body Mounts & Worn hood hinges have more of an effect on
clearance than most people realize.

I have new motor mounts but my body & rad support mounts are old & original.
I hope by fixing them it will give me more room.
