Newer Fuel Injected Pontiac Motor into older Oldsmobile?
Ok, let me run this by the tech types before I kill myself (and my wallet) trying this.
I want to build a 1-off Pontiac. Specifically, what I have in mind is taking my '95 Olds Cutlass Supreme Convertible and converting it to a Grand Prix Conv. that GM never made. I have the exterior body/unistructure etc. all figured out. In my quest to make this a better performer tho' than the 3.4L that came in the Olds, I'm curious to know how hard might it be for example to put a Supercharged 3800 series Pontiac engine into this Olds and work "correctly"? Is the block different so motor mounts will be also? If I get the complete engine wiring harness and ECM will it be 99% "plug & play"? OR does anyone recommend, say, a better Pontiac (GTO?) motor that might fit into the Olds Chassis? What are the compromises------or not? I can't keep up with all the changes GM made in the 90's anymore, so I'm hoping someone here might have a good suggestion to fascilitate the goal. ANy input would be helpful. I have the Olds, but I'm looking for a good engine candidate that can fit in for better performace possibly without getting too crazy if that makes any sense? Thanks in advance |

You could get the mounts or complete engine cradle from a Buick Regal as they where sold with the 3800 and the newer one 98 and up had supercharged 3800. Might want to try this site http://www.3800pro.com/forum/. They have a section on engine swaps.

Sounds like it would be a beautiful car that is one more reason why gm is and has been a general mess since they didn't build them!

If you can find one, pull the Series I 3800 supercharged engine out of a 1992-1995 Bonneville with the supercharged 3800, or the Series II SC 3800 out of a 1996-1999 Bonneville. I mention the Bonneville and not the Olds and Buick applications because it has the best gearing, therefore you should also grab the transaxle. Then install all of this on an engine cradle (with the accessories) off a 1992-1996 Buick Regal that was originally equiped with a 3800 engine. The 3.4 liter DOHC engine is IMO (as an auto tech), not one of GMs better engines, as it is based on the original "X" car 60 deg 2.8 (itself not really a bad engine), but adapted (with a chain and a timing belt) to have overhead cams. The 3800 , however, is a good solid all cast iron design, and is a proven design, based in archetecture on the 1964 Buick "Fireball" 225 V6, itself based on the old Buick small block V8.It also has the kind of smooth, torquey power delivery that is at home and in character with being in a Pontiac.
