Default New Wheels on `70 GTO

Although I believe Pontiac's Rally IIs are among the best looking of any factory wheel, I just couldn't resist the temptation to update the look of my car with something a bit more - but not too - modern.

I think I like `em. For her part, the War Department says I'd better like `em (now to figure out how to sneak some rear discs on it without her noticing).

Lower still? It's three inches lower than stock now.

Do you really think it's numbers matching all original?"

I like 'em. Tell us more about sizes (tires/wheels) and manufacturers.

I love the look, The car has a nice stance. I was thinking of doing something similar, can you give more info on the wheels and tires?

Wrap it up, I'll take it! One crazy thought, what would it look like with out the chrome rockers? Just a visual thing to think about. Somebody photoshop it.

The car looks great. I to would like to see you post the specs on the rims and rubber. How did you get 3 inches of drop? I need to drop mine that much also.

The wheels are Boss Motorsports 338s (Boss is a division of Eagle Alloys). About the only thing I don’t like is the name, BOSS, stamped into the center caps (I find the name kind of silly). That’s pretty much it though; the quality and construction seems quite good. The local tire shop that ordered them in for me was impressed with them as well, noting their belief that the wheels give up nothing to the much more common Torq Thrusts in terms of quality. And … I really like this part … they were made right here in the good old U. S. of A.

I struggled a bit with the choice of 17s versus 18s, but after looking at waaaaaaay too many pics of these diameters on various A-body cars, I decided that 18s were the better choice. I toyed with staggering the diameters as well (17s/18s or 18s/20s) but this didn’t last too long. Staggering seems to work well on Bimmers and Mercedes Benz, but I didn’t see a single image out there where I thought it worked as well on the A-body (or pretty much any muscle car, for that matter) as using the same diameters does.

I ended up buying 18 X 9.5 (I’ve always been a fan of the “deep dish” look) for the rear and 18 X 8 for the front. Backspaces are 5.031 and 4.5 respectively. Rear tires are 275 X 40 and the fronts are 245 X 40. No clearance issues reported by the tire shop or experienced by me. Could fairly easily have fit larger tires on the rear, but I think the 275s are about right for my car.

That car looks great as it is.

Mike

BTW you can tell the "War Dept" that she got a damned nice house by the look of it and the car needs to keep up!
