I have the Richmond super 4 speed with over drive. Its in a 61 tempest wagon behind a 421sd. I've been driving stick shift all my life but can't get this thing to shift for crap. Will hang up 1st to 2nd. Hard to find 3rd. I think I am trying too give it direction and just need to palm it and let it find its own way to third. A guy told me (builds hydralic throwout bearings for tremec) says the way the gears are cut makes them harder to shift. I heard its a learning experince too shift them. I did get mine for $2950.00 delivered from Pace Performance but a 1 ago.

I have a 67 GTO with T-10 and 411 12 bolt rear. The car is in as many pieces as possible now. I am going with a 455. I want to keep the 411's but I want to drive the car. Am I asking for too much or can it be done with a tranny change. If so I am open to all suggestions. Thanks,
Bill

Bought a brand new richmond 5 speed from jegs, and a long shifter. It has a manly shift quality that I love, and it was an easy install. That said when I put the procharger on I started breaking parts, powershifting is a definite no go, at the time I was breaking stuff I was making around 450hp.

First break

Second break

And now the second gear syncro is grinding, at least it's easy to take apart...third times a charm!

Carnage pictures area always fun.

Everyone tells me how the shifter on a TKO is 'wrong' (not in the right place)
$3.00 in bolts with some washers will move it over an inch...and make it right for a console. I did that for about half a year.

Or 30 minutes with a welder and bit of metal
I can't believe people pay $250 or whatever for those offset shifters. A TKO shifter with a half inch jog to the left...is all it is
to each his own, though

Seems like it would be nice if they made a fifth in the 4 + 1 Richmond that was LESS than 1:1..say a .89. Would be a great tranny for mild street builds and have a little of an overdrive. I've got a 76 TA driver is not going to have slicks and is a driver - it'd be great to have a inexpensive 5speed option w/ overdrive.

The Richmond super street is >3000.00 - if better be a good tranny!

I'd guess that McCleod that was at SEMA will be >3000 also.

I think were'e talking different richmonds. The one rated for 600 ft. lbs. is a Super Street 5 speed. The 4th gear is 1.1 and 5th. is .77 with a 2.89 1st. or 3.33. Thats the one I have that I haven't mastered shifting. It has a red case.

Well the transmission showed up today as advertised. It is the GM 3.06 26-Spline 7020526C model straight from Richmond in SC. I plan on installing it during the first week of March.

Yes there is an update: I spent last week installing the new engine and transmission. The transmission does not fit without modifications to the trans tunnel. This was a major disappointment during the install. I had to cut the shifter porch and move it to the rear about 3 inches. The tunnel had to be massaged a little to clear some of the linkage as well. The long shifter on the trans sits higher than the Hurst on the Muncie as well, by 2 inches. I don’t know if you can get a Hurst for the Super Street, but that would be an additional expense and make it much more than the Tremec. Shifter location was a huge issue for me, because I wanted to retain my console and with the Super Street it will be difficult without modifications. Overall I am a little dissapointed on the fit, but I like the transmisson performance. It seems that there is not an easy solution for a drop in 5 speed overdrive for the A-Body cars.

Jegs, Their freight fee was about half of Summit. I called Richmond and spoke with their tech dept for awhile. They are in Liberty,SC which is maybe 45 mins from me. I asked if I could buy direct, but they wouldn't do that. I called Doug Herbert and a local speed shop, and would get it freight free, but have to pay sales tax. Jegs was the least by a little over $100.00. Did have 1 hiccup on the address, but they took care of it. It will be here Friday instead of tomorrow, but that's OK. I can't start the swap til Sunday anyway due to family obligations. I know some one on this board got 1 for like 2,999 or close to that, but needed it sooner. I've got the Bandit Run in 3 weeks-no time to lose.

There is/was a Hurst shifter for them. I can take some pics tonight if you want.

The Hurst Vertigate and install kit are not around though. Although I did score a install kit new off Ebay for the one I bought years ago.

Are there seals on the shifter rods as they come out of the tranny? The race one does not.

Yes. I am so stoked about this tranny. It was very expensive (at least it was to me), but I think I got a good unit for the money.
