Default 1969 Trans Am Heads

I recently purchased a 69 Trans am project

The car was in peices, but mostly complete.
Original engine is there and complete including some pulleys and brackets, but there are three sets of heads. Two sets of 48 heads and one set of 62 heads.
One of the 48 sets and the 62 set are both dated to match the engine, but I am unsure which set would have come on the car originally
The car is an Automatic RAIII car without AC
Thanks in advance for any help

Wink Personally...

only saw "62" heads on a California build and I believe it was an air car. Not sure, though.

I had a California built #'s matching automatic A/C car a few years back. It also had 62's on it. Not sure where that car ended up. It was loaded with almost every option and NO radio!

From DeMauro's Firebird decoding guide. 62s list as RA 3 Auto with AC. 48s as RA 3 with manual. 16s for RA3 Auto without AC--which is what you want and don't have ...

The correct heads for a 1969 TA -w- automatic transmission are #62s. Pontiac stopped making #16 heads in 68 thus you won't find any dated 69.

Search for 'fbirdinconcord' s thread on his very original VN TA. Tons of great pics & info there.

I totally disagree with the implication of ANY '69 RA engine leaving the factory with "16"s in place. I did a nationwide study years ago therough "The Legend" with no documented case even alleged...let alone proven. JMHO.Ron BTW...I'd go wit hthe "48"s to be safe...or prepare to argue with the "experts" from here on out. Ask them to document just one car for you while you are at it. Good luck.

I think I will send both sets, the 62 and 48 that are dated correctly to the machine shop
I will put the 62 heads on the car, but wrap the 48 up and stick them on the shelf.
That way I will have both sets with correct dates and I can swap them if needed
