Default Trunk Lock Mechanism Installed

Well, finally got around to getting a new trunk lock and getting in installed. Thanks to those who supplied the information, we were able to locate one easily.

NAPA supplied one for us with 2 keys, my cost was right at $5. Took about as long to install as it did to type this! Just put the old bar in from the old mechanism, insert it into the truck and push the spring clip retainer in place!

It appears that GM used the same exact mechanism for decades on many of the cars they produced, so it's a readily available part and low cost.

I'm good to go till the next time I loose my keys....LOL....Cliff

Or get lost walking your dogs ouside in the snow, you really shouldn't wander out of sight of the shop-- at your advanced age--

With all that snow I hope you got dutchess some dog shoes. She can only chase intruders so far with no shoes.

The Min Pins have already pulled down one deer this year, it was ugly. It's amazing how well they get thru the snow. We're getting hammered with another snow storm today. The driveway is getting narrower and narrower. We need to pipe in some of that Southern sunshine to melt some of this snow off. I'm thankful my shop is on the same property as the house, at least I can get to work!....Cliff

I shoulda put some in the lobby. We're running out of places to put the snow, with more on the way...yikes!

Went without power for 3 days as well.

The deer are literally starving to death. They can't get thru the snow and ice to feed, so they are coming right up to the house, and to the edges of roads where snowplows have uncovered a few blades of grass, etc.

The deer in the pic is eating a few dead leaves on a small tree I took down. We scared her off a couple of times, but she came right back with two others and finished up the meal!....Cliff

How did you get the trunk open? From the back seat area? Thanks. John

"How did you get the trunk open? From the back seat area? Thanks. John"

John, first I tried to "pick" the lock, no good.

I removed the back seat, and put a couple of LONG 3/8" extensions together and loosened the bolts to release the trunk lock.

The new mechanism slipped right into place in seconds using the old link. I'm pretty vehicle "illiterate" when it comes to things outside of the drivetrain department, and managed the repair without a problem.

Yesterday I got BURNED helping my son repair his girlfriends car. She has a pretty new Chevy Cobalt. Just out of warranty, and the wipers quit. No matter what method I tried, the wipers would NOT pull off the shafts so I could remove that big peice of plastic to access the wiper motor.

The nut had fallen off the motor shaft and the arms were hanging under it. After about 2 hours of foul language I managed to get the link back on the shaft and the nut in place and tightened down.......but the wipers were stopping in the MIDDLE of the windshield......#*(%#(&%!

Had to do it all over again, another hour or so to get it fixed.

I put wheel bearings, brakes, and rotors on the car in less than an hour! Guess I better stick to the drivetrain stuff!.....Cliff

Thanks, Cliff, good info. I'm going to have to get my trunk open in a little while. Key doesn't work, so the looong extensions will be my method. Just got the car (69 lemans) and haven't be able to work on it yet. The trunk is at the top of my list. John

It appears that you guys are all getting our snow. We usually have so much I cant see the cars in the yard and we have to dig around the fence to keep the dogs in. I think we havent gotten any more than 4 or 5 feet this year, but that doesnt bother me much.

that can work of course if you want to save the old lock for rekeying (much more trouble and $$ than buying a new generic lock.
the quick and dirty 30 second method is a 3/8" drill bit thru the lock mechanism right where the key would go. then a fat screwdriver in resulting hole and 1/4 turn to pop the trunk lid

BVR421, that sounds pretty easy...... drastic, but easy. I hadn't really thought about just 'poppin' it out. Just drill it, eh?? Should work. Thanks. John

I knew about the drilling it out deal, but with my luck I'd slip and take half the paint off the trunk lid!

I have no luck whatsoever with these sort of things, so I try to avoid doing anything outside the drivetrain area!......Cliff

Kinda where I am. I'm looking for someone ELSE'S trunk lock to try first. Paint's pretty good on my trunk. I use this as a 'plan-b' thing. With a 'vert, it oughta be FUN.
