Fuel system design ideas
OK guys since I've got the old tank dropped to get to the stupid shackle bolts(got to drop the tank for the top ones) on the Camaro/ 500" IA2 project thought I would go ahead with the new tank. HP is 695 with a 4150 Holley/Demon on it. Having a cell in the trunk isn't something I want so I am going to sump a new tank. Figured I would add a bung near the top one for return and one for a vent, reuse to old sender for a guage(or could throw in a new 1/2 sender and return). Factory vent line is maybe 1/4" and no return in the factory sender. I have an extra Mallory 140, or a Mallory 280.

Is there a question in there somewhere Skip???
Just kidding... I'm in the same boat right now with my '72 bird, found some rust in the trunk floor and I also need to deal with the fuel system too,so I've been pondering all the possibillities. Wish I had some good advice. I'm kinda on the fence about sumping my OE tank, heard about more than a few guys having rust issues plugging up filters and such,so if you go that route, make sure you seal the inside of the tank after doing all the fab work. I got my CE sump pretty well trimmed and ready to install too,but just not sure if I wanna go that route. I really want try and keep the car to looking as stock as possible from an external visual inspection, and a sump with big ol' fuel lines/filter/pump out back tends to give that deception away big time. I have thought about doing what Nick Scavo did with his badass black impala,he sectioned out the OE tank top and trunk floor and sunk a cell in thru the top so at least from the outside it all looked dead stock. Only giveaway would be opening the trunk. But I dunno,I have at least four or five different ways I could go at this, just not sure how I want to do mine. Bret P. |

Yep suggestions or comments if it sounds right. Plan on running -8 for line or hardline 1/2" supply and return if I use a pump needing a return like the 280. Not sure if the 140 will feed 125HP more than I have one feeding now. Not sure how big a vent line I need either.
I just don't like gas or fumes being on the topside with me even with a trunk firewall, paranoid I guess. I even have a brand new cell just decided against it. Bought a new tank to use. Welding shop I used for deeper oil pan sumps can make a SS one so it won't rust, and fit the tank better. The Jegs one is not a real good fit.

I know what you mean Skip.
As for the vent,-6 would be the minimum IMHO,-8 even better, and try to fit a ROVV in there if at all possible. As for the pump,I would lean towards using the bigger mallory pump (comp 250) with that sorta hp. One of my safety related concerns with the sumped OE tank is a rear end collision,on the early birds like mine there really is'nt a whole lot back there protecting the rear body (and thus the fuel tank),so even minor rear end impacts would be a risky situation, honestly those OE rear bumpers on the early birds are a joke in that respect. So yeah,I hear you on that sorta stuff. I was probably gonna add the rear seat firewall on mine regardless. I always remember the scene in Mc.Q when his T/A meets it's demise, and they come to get him and he yells something like "get some foam on this thing,I'm up to my @ss in gas". Yeah,I dont need that kinda drama. Bret P. |

Ship, The guy who built your crossram Intake manifold installed two of these INSIDE the fuel tank!
http://www.maperformance.com/bosch-m...0-254-044.html Used a pair of filtered intake screens attached to the inlets of the pumps. Ran the steel fuel lines out the of the tank through Bulkhead fittings. Each pump will support 600 hp. He manually selects either pump for normal driving and then manually turns on the other pump for racing. Two steel lines forward to a pair of EFI to Carb Fuel Pressure Regulators (one for each pump). http://www.themustangdepot.com/servl...ressure/Detail Might be one way to have a stock tank look and plenty of fuel available. Pumps and regulators are not that expensive really. Tom Vaught ps He cut the back off of a new tank, made a mount system for the pumps, made a baffle system like a road race pan, and added a new rear access flange and plate. He then attached the cut off end of the tank (non functional) to the main tank and from the rear it all looked stock. Remove the tank straps, a few fasteners, and he could get access to the access plate and the pumps, screens. Tank was probably stronger and safet than a factory tank.

Since this will be mainly a drag car hopefully no rear end collisions!

I can send some excel files of what he did Skip, but I think you have the idea.

Thanks for the input Tom.
Any thoughts on the max HP supplied by a 140 pump?
