q-jet vs Holley part #2
5 runs were made with my Holley this morning all runs were 12.44-12.46 all at 108 and some change, 60fts all 1.77 this is with a 1" open spacer on top my RPM Manifold, next came the q-jet first run 12.43 with a 1.76 60 ft, but that was right after track prep, next run 12.44 with a 1.77 60 ft and 108.26. I stopped there cause it was obvious they are very closely matched, next came my brothers 830 also, first run 12.45 @ 107.86 with the same 1.77 60 ft. I stopped there as There was no difference there either.. I do believe with the proper intake the holley would be a solid tenth better than the q-jet/ RPM, also I did not use a spacer for q-jet. so that in itself could either hurt E.T or help it? so there it is in black and white! my car was spitting numbers today like u can't believe! 3 carbs and the spread in E.T was less then .02!! temp was 80 + with a 60 dew point!!

See Darby, you matched Cliff's testing!
Reality is with the right combo the numbers should be very close between Holley and Q-jet. If there is a difference it will most likely be the intake design vs the carb design vs the metering and fuel flow capability of either carb. Glad I could help you out on your deal and enjoyed talking to you on the phone. Tom Vaught

Darby - I was at Mike Chell's today as you were making your runs and he was keeping us informed with your updates. You really did give every carb a fair shake.
Are you going to stick with the tried-and-true Qjet ? FWIW: When we changed from the RPM to the single plane Torker 2 [same carb and spacer, no other changes to combo] we picked up .14 seconds on our best ever time. Jim

Tom I sure did!.. Thank you for your help also. and I enjoyed talking to you too
Jim I think I may try and find a torker 2 and give the holley another try before the end of the year.. Yea I made 12 runs today, never did try open header was to damn hot! heat index was 85 at times, and it was alot of work that way it was,lol.. FWIW I lost .16 and 2 mph going to a 28" tire today. I will be staying with the 26".. I had them so I thought i would give it a try also..

Darby - Refresh my feeble mind - what rear gear are you running ?
We tried 28" tires also but found that the 26" size was better with our 3.42 gear. Jim

"See Darby, you matched Cliff's testing!"
Yep, our back to back testing has tyically been no more than .02 seconds either way and less than .30 mph. I just obtained a ported HO intake for testing on my car, but we woln't be back to back testing it as it involves too much messing around with different Shaker assemblies to use the RPM at the track. I know what my car runs in any given weather with the RPM intake, so we'll at least get an idea if we have given up some power anyplace. We will back to back test the porte P4B-QJ intake when we get it back from Dave at SD Performance, he's doing some dyno testing with it currently.....Cliff

We've had 67 days over 100° this summer. That's not the heat index either, that's actual temps. The record for over 100° days in a year down here is 69 days over 100°,,,and there is likely a few hot days left yet... Anyhow, sounds like the testing went pretty well, good reading IMO. |

Sounds like you had a good time Darby and if you focus on one carb & tuning I'm sure you'll find more in your combo.
Dist, exhaust, intake & mapping your A/F will be key items in your quest to optimize. Best |

Darby,
Got your PM and you can simply post rather than PM. As for your PV, again map out what your engine is doing so install a vacuum gage and see what your pulling at the interval in question rather than guessing what you need for a PV. Same goes for your A/F. you should have something to atleast refferance where your at. When at the track tuning a car I usally have the guy make a run with my baseline and the A/F meter data logging. I'll watch the run about half way down the track so I can see and hear whats going on. When the car returns to the pits I read the log & look at a few plugs then make a change and repeat. Bottom line for you is your still picking up! Last edited by shaker455; 09-13-2009 at 10:16 AM. |

if the carb is the correct size, and meters properly, they all act the same..i think the q-jet, if not sucked dry, or asked to supply a bigger engine than it can, is the best carby ever built..
it always shows me better short times than a double pumper , in a street converted car..if ya running 4500+ stall, or a brake, then its a wash.. i would work the q-jet to death, and id bet ya get better performance than the holley in your set-up..look at that F.A.S.T. ra2 firebird..130 mph with stock intake and q-jet..tell me they dont work killer..lol.. |

Jeff or Tom v. too.. with my nascar style linkage cam my secondaries didn't open fully i could push them manually not quite a 1/8" to full open, but how the cam is designed i can't see how to get full throttle angle? as it rides on the cam and at full it is off the cam what can i do?

You got to dump that base for a modern unit....I know you were looking.

Jeff, I offered to sell him a proper base but Darby kind of puckered up on the $1000 price. The difference from your price sheet, Jeff, is that Tom Vaught would have sold it to him and it would be a "Collectors Item"
Actually Darby, there is no way to really correct that deal. Most flow testing shows little if any extra flow on the last few degrees of blade angle to Vertical in the bore. The fuel distribution in the intake WILL change though. Tom Vaught

well it wasn't the price Tom. It was would i really need to spend it? as i just proved sunday that it really made no difference from my 750 base to my brother's 850 base.. the time slip doesn't lie!
