Default T10 Manual Tranny behind 600hp Motor

Hey Guys ..just needed an opinion on this ....got a 76 Trans Am that I am building up and want to know if a t10 will hold up to 600 horses from the motor???

If not is there a way to beef up the t10 to make it hold up to that amount of horsepower
or should I go to a different manual tranny????

Thanks

once you start to hook up that 600 hp well if will be a toss up as to what gives out first, the clutch, the trany, the U joints, or the rear gears or the posi unit if its posi.
YOU NEED TO INSTALL A DRIVESHAFT LOOP NOW!

I split the aluminum case down both sides with street tires on the street with only around 400hp. Was a 455, 670 heads, ect. But I was real hard on it.

MAYBE if you could find one of the "Old" cast iron cases and have it built with the best internals. Remember HP isn't as destructive as the huge TQ our Pontiacs make! Good luck! JD

Check ponjon's answer.

It's all about hooking up and traction, tire size, etc.

I've got a decent butler built 474 w/ a ccams hr288 and kre 310's in a 76 TA w/ ST-10 four speed.

Car ONLY has BFG 255/60/15 in the back - sooo, no problems at all. It'll cook the tires 1-3 gears. 245/60/15 in the front. They are great looking tires and fit the car well.

The problems come when you take it to the track and can't make decent numbers because you have no traction. 600hp + ST-10 + traction = problems.

If you continue to "granny shift" the way that you do, Lee, you will have no issues. LOL!

Reality is a "heat of battle" powershift will probably wound the trans badly if the tires ever stick. It is all in the tires.

I'm in the same boat as cls. Want 600hp+T10+street.

There's gotta be a way. I know there is. What I cant figure out is how I can't get in contact with the guys who build stuff for the T10s. I know it's out there. Clutchless, straight cut, stronger, cases, you name it.

I just hear of Mid Valley but can't get a hold of them. I know richmond sells "built" T-10s, but offer no parts.

This trans is used in nascar. Had a variant in just about every US manufacturers cars, even tried to add another gear to make a 7-speed in 80's vettes. And I can't find one place that'll mention a stonger component for sale?

Somebody gotta know somthing.

I have a 500+hp 440" using the 288/296 UD solid flat( same as LNs before his ST-10 went away )and a close ratio ST-10 w/ the 2.43 1st gear(strongest T-10) .I don't beat on it w/sticky tires so I'm ok after several yrs . Even with BFG 245s in the rear I'm wondering how much longer mine will last. As said before ,though, with that kind of power (you're going to use it more than you think) it 's probably going to happen someday sometime down the road!

Yep.......split the case and was NOT power shifting either. The car was hooking good with drag radials on asphalt. From a roll, shifted from 1st to 2nd....then before I could grab third.....BOOM....it was gone.
Don't get crazy looking for traction or you'll end up with trans-toast.......either that or have a spare trans on hand for a replacement.....like I did.

If one could build it with a 904 nodular iron case, iron mid-plate, and nickel alloy gears, keep the vehicle weight down, and use an appropriate rear gear, it might last for a while, but I wouldn't trust it with slicks and 600 hp for long. I don't know where one would find nickel alloy gears these days.

Tex-Racing used to sell all the parts but is now a division of G-Force Transmissions, and I think they are getting away from the ST-10 in favor of a derivative they call the GF4A. No idea what it costs or what parts interchange. http://www.texracing.com/gf4a.html.

Would a Super-Case Muncie with the Italian M-22 gears hold up?

I am currently driving my 67 Lemans convertible with a fresh 467 making 606hp and over 600 lbs. ft. of torque with a ST-10 out of a 1978 TA. I run 245/50/16 Yokohamas on GTA rims which haze until about 100 mph. I figure I will be replacing it next year with a Richmond 5 or 6 speed and a 9 inch housing once I add the rear suspension parts to make it hook. It just spins like crazy if I try and pull out at anything above idle but with the spinning I figure I won't break anything. Knock on wood.

Any ideas where one could get a 904 nodular iron case, iron mid-plate or and nickel alloy gears for the ST10? An iron mid-plate (if available) would appear to be the least expensive/easiest mod...is this iron mid-plate mod worth much by itself ?

Call S-K Speed out on Long Island and ask for Brian. He should be able to answer any questions about a cast iron T-10.
