could a 76 trans am 455 be born with a 75 455.?
I was told that at the end of the 455 era, wich was 1976,that pmd was putting any 455 that was availible in the trans ams, when i mean any, I mean it could be stamped for a automatic mating to a 4 speed and 4 speed 455 mating to a automatic ,anyone know anything about this .?

Honestly, I wouldn't doubt it.

I've also heard of '76 T/As ending up with 75 no.481988 or 500557 400 blocks as well, depending when they came off the assembly line. It's feasible that a late 75 motor could have ended up in the engine bay of an early '76 car.

ALOT of guys find clever excuses to explain why a non original but "close enugh" engine is in a car after the original expired. People selling cars always think Numbers Matching Engines will raise the value of the car. The ammount of guys claiming some 1975 455 T/As were built with an "S" in the VIN instead of a "W" is rediculious lately. The cars "VIN" on the engine is on the block next to the timing cover on the pass side (by the rad hose outlet) and is much harder to see than the "engine production number" which is near head gasket. Most (not all) of the 4 speed T/As had very hard lives, I would expect 1/2 dont have their original engines anymore due to lead foots.
