Default 62 Pontiac remote control mirror cable routing question

I need to to know were the cable passes through the firewall on a 62 Catalina with the remote control mirror. Also how it is supposed to mount to the bottom of the dash. Pictures would be a great help.

Thanks in advance!

The large oval rubber grommet that plugs into the firewall has 3 holes in it...the sheathed mirror cables pass thru one of the smaller ones (wiring passes thru the other two).

If I think of it, in the morning I will post some pics of this.

BTW, don't disconnect the three cables from the dash control.

OK, I see the grommet you are talking about.

But you last comment has me wondering. Unless this is not a correct mirror I see no way of installing it without disconnecting the cables from the dash control. The diameter of the dash control is larger than the base of the mirror and also the center hole where the cables go through the fender is only about 1/2" diameter and the size of the dash control is over one inch.

Can you plit the bottom of the grommet and slide the cable into it? after the cables in place use black silicone, [ I like the RIGHT STUFF] and carefully wipe it off so it's not as visible.

Mike

I have removed three of these units from 1962 Pontiacs and with each I removed the cables then reinstalled. There was no other way, that I saw in the salvage yard, to remove said mirror from car. All were reinstalled without any difficulty.

Why not remove?

Yes, I've disconnected and reconnected the control without a lot of problems. I'd try it the first time with the mirror assembly on the bench, so you can figure out how it works before you're crammed under the dashboard with a flashlight in your teeth trying to do it.

what Stuart said.

basically, the gotcha is in the re-connecting of the cables to the correct 'sockets'...when I said "don't disconnect the three cables from the dash control", what I meant was, as a user, it's a PITA when you push the lever one way and the mirror goes the udder way.

...and as per usual, I didn't get pics posted... sorry blokes. I will endeavor to do so tomorrow!
