Default Hood pins for '71

Guys,

Was the purpose of the optional hood pin/lanyard kits to supplement, or replace the standard hood latch back in the day?

I sure would like a pair of original or reprod. for my 455HO because the hood shudders when she's doing 100 miles per. Scary for me if the hood latch fails for some unseen reason, sends me off into a ditch during a simple joyride in the country! Don't want that at all!

Any insights or leads on an authentic set for me also? Not a Mr. Gasket universal set.

Later.

Why are you driving 100 miles an hour on country roads?

The 70-2 Chevelles had hood pins factory on all SS cars, GM used items across multiple makes, I had a 71 GT37 and the pins sure looked like chevelle pins to me...identicle, and they where nicely built to, no autozone looking junk, try looking for chevelle pins, they are on ebay all the time as repops, but i see NOS sets often...

Gotta get my kicks now and then. 1/4 mile only, to scary more than that.

I see one like you say on Ebay now but not sure of authenticity for '71 GTO; will look closer.

Suppose I gotta drill into my steel hood huh..............hmmmmmmmmmm

Got them on there last weekend. Not bad.........adds just another little hint of speed without too much bling; moreover, safety on the road. I like the fact you could have had these installed at the dealership in the day also.

I'll try to get some pictures on here of the final installation.

When i worked for ford dealerm i had a buddy that worked for Pontiac dealer.. He gave me a GM set for my 69 gto .this was in 1970. I never did install them. just sold them a month ago on e-bay. couldn't bring my self to drill the holes in my hood.

Default pic's attempt

I think they actually helped with my hood gaps and alignment. Been fighting that issue since I got the car.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but did the 1972 GTO's also have 'available' hood pins as well?

I was thinking about adding them to my Goat.

Thanks,
Brian
