Default Crane cam

What is this boards opinion of the Crane 969681 RA IV copy for a 455 .030 over, 6X4 heads milled to 89cc, 800 QJet built to Cliffs #3 formula, and Muncie M 20 with 355 gears?

Thanks, Jack.

Collectible

Probably fine with 1.5:1 rockers, like the 73 SD 455 cam.

too funny! too true!

too much cam for any street car of mine but pretty driveable with your 4sp and your 3.55s
you will likely need to do some work on the carb to get it to idle with that cam JMO...

Jack I have the Crower copy of the Ram Air 4 cam in my 6X8 headed 9.3 455 with regular hyd lifters. It's a mellow cam with excellent street manners...I run 2.56 rear end with a 4 speed hydro, 3.97 first gear....
I run a Cliffs Quadrajet. Cliff built the engine...

The T cam grind, pn# 979041 looks the same as 73SD K cam grind.

#9785744 1966-69 RA H 301 113 .407" .447" 76 313 118 .407" .447" sure looks like
#493323 1973-74 455SD Y 301 113 .407" .447" 76 313 118 .407" .447".

The word is that #480737 (1973 455 SD) K 308 112 .470" .516" 87 320 115 .470" .516" never got into production engines?
Would have made a dog with 8.4:1 compression.

Me memory gone to pot; was thinking that some 455 HO or SD 4speed round port actually got the Ram IV 400 cam but with 1.5:1 rockers.

When you gots a production 400 with Ram IV cam & 1.65:1 rockers as a basis of idle & perf,
then a 455 4-speed & mildly worked 6X heads will do well with the Ram IV cam & 1.5:1 rockers.

Jim Hand reccomends Rhodes lifters with that cam.

years ago i joined the Dayton chapter of the Trans Am club of America.i made friends with Bob Blair.he was an old racer, held records in NHRA an IHRA,several for a 69 428 G/P.anyway he bought a new 73 SD with min options to turn into an NHRA stocker.when tearing it down for blueprinting he said he found the bigger cam.please don't flame me,this is just what he said.when he found out how rare it was he didn't race the car,but bought a loaded 74 for his son.ordered every option they could find, just didn't see the front console was an option.looked strange with a rear consolee and no front one.
