Edelbrock P4B intake
I have aquired one for testing. It looks pretty wide on the rear runner by the distributor.
Does anyone know if they will clear an HEI?......Cliff

IIRC, I read somewhere that the stock HEI won't work with the PB4 intake...

Thanks, the one I have is exactly like the one in the pic. It was given to me 3-4 years ago, just getting around to checking it out. It has the square flange and both bolt patterns. They also made a version that was for the q-jet only, anyone try one of those with an HEI intake?.....Cliff

The HEI housing is very close to the runner on a P4B, but clears. Problem I had was one of the lugs on the distributor cap did not clear, so ended up grinding on the cap a little bit for clearance. Used only 3 of the 4 lugs.

I dug out the intake and it looks like it will clear, however, it is the square flange model and will NOT take a q-jet carburetor at the flange without an adapter, bummer!
I just bought the correct one on E-Bay, item # 190277330134. We'll be testing it this summer with our stock Shaker assembly and see how it compares with the iron and RPM intakes?.....Cliff

I shipped my QJ P4B to Rocky recently, so he can flow test it up against stock intakes. If I'd known you were going to test intakes I would have asked him to send it to you after he was done
Should be interesting. I never tried mine with HEI though. On my 68 setup the throttle post in the back didn't line up well and the thermostat housing bolts are turned slightly to clear the runner. This made alternator mounting an issue. Later years probably have no issue on this stuff. FWIW I've always wondered about this intake since the runners appear to be voluminous, and the plenum is average to small. |

When I seen one of these on ebay I emailed Jim H.. On it and he said to stay with the stock intake was way better.....So will be interesting to see this and how it works out...

Google in edelbrock p4b. On the very first link there are some good pictures for comparison.Theres definately a difference in the runner sizes and shapes between a couple of the models.

The one we purchased is a q-jet only model, first one I've seen. We have a square flange model, and the plenum area is noticably smaller than the q-jet version, not sure about the runners themselves?
We'll get it gasket matched, remove the water crossover, and clean up the runners if/as needed. Testing to come as soon as the tracks open up here......Cliff

After doing some research, it turns out that there were several versions of the P4B intake produced.
The one I purchased is the last pic, we also have one like the 1st pic in the shop. It's interesting to note that the P4B was developed into the modern Performer intake. At some point Edelbrock decided to narrow up the runners and make them smaller. The did the same thing with the Small Block Chevy Performer intake, as really old samples look almost exactly like the Pontiac unit in pic #3. Ours new one is the Q-jet only model, but appears to have enough material to set it up for square flange carburetors, which we will do before testing it......Cliff

That units has had the divider removed. I've tested a few dual plane intake with extensive divider mods, completey removed, etc. They give up as much as 40 ft lbs torque on the dyno, and at most we've seen 2 hp improvment for peak power, usually they are off clear across the loaded rpm range.
It's best to leave the divider in them, at least from what I've seen. Quite a few RPM intakes have been sent here from folks who modified them, or aquired them after the divider was cut out. We use aluminum flat bar, notch both ends of the flange area, and drive it a custom divider. Pretty easy modification.....Cliff

It will be interesting to see how they compare with and without the notch.
