sport mirrors or no sport mirrors?
OK heres the question's, I am in the process of restoring a 1970 GT-37, I want to take the chrome mirrors off and add the bullet type sport mirriors, I just bought a set off E-Bay for a good price, Now then someone has told me that the sport mirrors were not available in 1970 and that they became an option in 1971.
So Heres my question's #1 is it true that the sport mirrors were not available in 1970? #2 if it is true that they were not available than how stupid do all of you think it would look to install them anyway? I guess it should be up to my preference as to how I want my car but I would still like to hear from others on the issue. Thanks. Bob |

#1 - You're right, Sport Mirrors were not available in '70
#2 - My opinion, wouldn't look stupid at all. Unless you're doing a concours correct restoration, go with what you like. 99% of the people out there (outside of this board) won't know it's not "correct". I'm a bit biased, though as I'm installing them on my '70 Lemans because I wanted a right side mirror to drive with...and why not?

post your question in the 70-72 lemans/gto section. i think the mirrors came out in 71, but not sure, and llloyd or one of those experts who live in that section will know for sure.
i've installed them on both my cars. i say put 'em on. not sure bout this either; but camaro mirrors look just like gto mirrors but the pedestal is angled a bit different, and you will notice as it will look funny from the front. they appear to be angled differently. my white car has those mirrors. make sure you get the gto mirrors; they are a bit harder to find. the orange car has the correct mirrors, notice that the tops are level. hope this helps. |

They came out in 71', but I put them on my 70 GTO painted to match the body. They look like they belong just fine, and I like them......Dave K.

I have a set on my 69 GTO. They look like they belong. I also like them and don't give a rat's butt what anybody else thinks.

Do it and do not even think twice about it unless you plan to enter the car in shows were the car has to be 100% original. Otherwise the car will look great with them!

Not available on '70 GT-37. Standard on '71 GT-37 HT only. Not available on post as wing window interfered and hit it. Not sure on '72 LeMans GT but think it was the same.
They probaby would interfere on '70 if it is a post car. If HT it will not interfer as there is no wing window.

Mine came off of a 78 Firebird I found in the junkyard. They did require a different base. i'd imagine those you have will work fine.

Thanks to all of you.
I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for your thoughts toward this issue, Its nice to know a bunch of people like all of you.
I am going to put them on my 1970 GT-37 its a non post car NO WING WINDOW'S. I bought a set off of a guy on E-Bay he says there 70 thru 72 GTO I will have to check the angle of the bases right away when they come in the guy said he was going to ship them friday, If the angle is not correct I will send them back. Thanks again to all of you. Bob Miller. |
