Chisel a hole in the plug, stick a pry bar or big flat blade screw driver in the hole and pry the plug out. You may have to chisel the lip of the plug (the part that is against the block) but be very careful NOT to hit the block with the chisel.

65 its simple, get a piece of 1/2 coper rod, pipe, or??? tap on the bottom half and the top usually sticks right out after about 4 to 5 bumps with a hammer, simply grab it with vise grips and yank and there out!

By far the best way. No reason to baby them and try and get them to rotate. Just knock them into the block and reach in with your fingers and pull them back up at a 90° angle to grab with a seal remover or pry bar.

Too much chance of damaging the sealing surface of the hole in the block by poking their sides with a chisel.

I have always used a large socket, around an inch, with at least a 6' extension. That way, I can hold on to it and not hit my fingers. then hit it hard a few times with a small slendge hammer until it knocks it. Then, i pry it out with a large pair of channel locks. simple simple

Here is another method i use when changing one in vehicle or outside sometimes, I take a sharp punch pound it in the center Then i take a 5/16-18 or 3/8-16 tap then tap it Screw in a Bolt and use a slide hammer to pull it right out, Always works and that way you aren't prying against the block, Just my Personal preference, Also the Concave shape lends itself to tightening up to the bolt as it pulls out so as not to strip out FWIW

Seriously, just a regular hammer will do the job. Knock them in, and use the claw to pull them out. I'll take some pictures...

Idea would be to use something blunt to hammer them in - no use in making unnecessary holes and having filings and chips in the water jacket. I wouldn't just use a hammer since a slight miss would hit the cast iron. Using a large blunt drift will insure only the plug is hit. They pull back out so easy about anything resembling a hook will zap them out through the hole.

I can typically remove all 6 side core plugs on a 400 block in less than ten minutes by simply knocking them into the block, turning them sideways, and then prying them out using a large screw driver slipped under the side of the core plug. See, the core plug will elongate into an oval shape, and slip right out of the block. A 389 only has two pligs on a side so it should be even faster. The end plugs are only slightly more difficult. Tap the plugs in carefully hitting the plug in the center so that it gets smaller on the outside edges. You hit something in the center and the sides pull in naturally.
