Hyd roller street manners

Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.509 in. Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.488 int./0.509 exh. lift Lobe Separation (degrees): 112 I am in the middle of a mild 455 build and wondering if I should change my cam choice. My intentions originally were to run a 068 with 1.65 rockers.I am not too happy about the "possibilty" of losing a motor build over a cam failure, so I feel the additional expense may be worth the peace of mind. The combo is 455 w/ 6x heads and rare manifolds. Approx 9.5 compression. The car is a 69 lemans with 2004r and 355 gear. The cam specs above are the mildest crane listing. How does it compare with the 068 ? and can I keep the 1.65 rockers? I already bought them. |

I run a custom Comp hyd roller in my 400.
It's a 220/224 at .050 with .513 in / .528 ex lift using 1.50 rockers. I run #48 heads and with the TRW pistons I run and have approx 9.5-1 comp. In the 400 my cam has a very slight lope, just enough to say it's not stock. I have run an 068 cam, a Crane H272-2 hyd cam (216/228 with less than .500 lift in/ex) and this hyd roller. Hands down the hyd roller is stronger (seat of the pants only), especially in the low and mid range. If I were you I'd spec out something a little more than what you're considering. Maybe more in the 225/232 range. It would still be very mild and completely streetable. It would act more like the 068 does in a 400.

I run a hydraulic roller in a 461, the XR288HR. With 236/240 at .050" it's a little lumpy- but definitely streetable.

"Go with 1.5 R/R and sell the 1.65's"
Why ? This presuming the valve lift with the 1.65 rockers will work with his intended installed height and valve springs. And with a small cam being considered its not like there will be a LOT of additional stress on the valvetrain. Info on the subject by Jim Hand: http://www.pontiacstreetperformance....ockerArms.html |

Yes I agree, maybe. I know it isn't apples to oranges, but hear me out. I have a hyd roller in my truck motor. It is is a very strong combo but there is definately a trade off in driveability. The truck is 4200 # with a ford 460.It has a nice idle when warm and really cleans uo by 1000 rpm and smooths out.It isn't impressive untill 2600 rpm and then comes on like a 2 stroke.Very explosive power, but requires you to drive it hard for fun.The motor is more agressive than the 455 build. It has ported heads, larger valves,10.5 compression.I am running a high rise dual plane intake. While the combo makes awesome power,it is on the edge as far as driveability is concerned for me.The logic is based on Hand's wagon 455 combo running stronger with the 068 and 1.65, than it did with a 041 cam. So here are the specs on my ford cam, I am using this as my yardstick for comparison.

I'm running that Crane cam in my cruiser with 1.65 rockers, and it is a small cam even in the 400. Sound is closer to the 067 cam than the 068 (although the Crane runs stronger than the 068). I've got the XR288HR in my 4-speed, and I wouldn't want that large of cam in the cruiser with the A/C. So this should set the limits of your search somewhere in between these two.
