Default which headers ???

I have a 1961 Safari wagon 389 (2bbl), 4-speed (originally a 3-speed). I'm installing an edelbrock 4bbl intake and a holly 600cfm carb and would like to replace the cam with one that would give the motor a good sound. I've been told to use an 1965 GTO 067 cam. ...yes/no?

What headers should I use on the car? ..the car has power steering.

I'm sure many guys on this forum have done the same thing.

I'd like to hear what has been done and what NOT to do.

thanks,
thunderplex

For a good all around cam I have always liked the 068 cam. What rearend gears do you have? Wide or close ratio tranny?

Default 068 vs 067 cam

I've been told that the 068 cam was for automatic trans cars and the 067 was for manual trans cars. True or false? My Safari has a Muncie m21 4-speed transmission.

I wouldn't worry about the hassle of headers for that cam. Summit 2801 is good also for the street, like the 068 but with the extra built in lift.

False, The 067 cam is a standard 4 BBL camshaft, used with both transmissions. The 068 is the HO camshaft, used with both transmissions and is a more aggresive cam than the 067. Factory HP for the 067 was 335 HP while the 068 was 360 HP, although the HP ratings changed a small amount depending upon what year and engine combination your referring to the 068 is the better choice for what you'd want. The exhaust note isn't going to be changed much as both cams idle quite smoothly.

From my own experience if you want a little rumble at idle but don't want to sacrifice vaccum or fuel mileage, the Comp cams Hi energy 268 will work for your application. But the decision is up to you.
