Default t56 trans swap

Has anyone swapped a t56 trans into their early pontiac 67-79? I was wondering if I could put one into a 67 firebird with a 67 400 block? Will it bolt up?

DD performance makes a trans that will. Adapter plate, custom input shaft, usees 26 spline clutch, Viper tailhousing, mechanical speedo....beat the tunnel a lot or cut it out. Will handle a lot of power...not cheap.

not gonna bolt up - not a stock one, at least
They are several 'versions' you need to research. the LT1 t56 vs the LS1 t56. The LT1 one is easier to use

you can buy some adapter bellhousings from quicktime or mcleod though, that will do the swap

Factor in a solid $600 or $700 for that bellhousing (modular one maybe)
$500 on ebay maybe

And then you have to deal with the hydraulic throwout bearing...another $2 or $300 or so i believe for a kit to do that, with some fab on your end

Not to mention your speedometer won't work without a conversion piece...backup lights....etc

In the end, after researching it all, you should just buy a TKO600 that will bolt up directly, considering the prices of T56's
If you can get one for nearly free - might be worth your time. Otherwise, not.

If you do the TKO600 route, do some research on its shifting, they have some known issues.

I have my backup lights hooked up now after not having them for years with the richmond tranny.

I think the TKO shifts a hellluva lot better than the 'ole muncie

Never shifted a T56 to compare though

Also, how are you going to use 6th on a T56? A .50 overdrive? I don't know if a traditional pontiac motor will like to be lugged along on the highway in 6th gear running at like 1400 RPM

That 6th gear seems rather worthless, i figure

ya like it, stickboy?

DD's T56 is based on different ratio's than the LS GM variety...OD gears are .80 and .62 I think...anyways I run a 3.90 28" tire thru the lights at 5800 and 6th is around 2000 on the hwy at 65. 455 loves it, no problem....makes carb tuning the transfer slots area's interesting to say the least....

i have been batting around the idea of selling my T-56 in favor of an automatic. its from D and D performance and will bolt up to your pontiac motor. it also uses the stock muncie 4 speed Z bar linkages and your stock speedo will bold right up (no electronic adapter thingy needed). It is a Dodge Viper tranny and it has a .50 overdrive. she huuumms at like 2000 RPM at 80 MPH with 3.90's. I really like the tranny but i think that an automatic would be a better fit for my new turbo. shoot me a PM if you are interested.
