Default Frame numbers

I searched and searched on the TOP of my 68 frame and couldn't find the VIN or any other numbers. Then I came across this photo in another thread that shows some numbers on the side. Is this the VIN etc location?

The #'s on the side should be the frame's part #.
The vin should be on the top rail fairly close to that location, some times rust pitting makes it hard to read them.

Thanks Steve.

I've got two 68 frames and the VIN is not visible. I'd like to at least confirm they are GTO frames (vs Chevy etc). Will the part number help confirm that?

Yes it will match a vin# on a GTO.

For 1968 the vin would be stamped on the top of the frame above the part number, build date, and plant code stamped on the side of the frame as seen in the photo posted.

Often the vin is in a smaller font than the side stampings plus rust pitting makes the vin stamp very hard to find. Wire brush the top area and then use some baby powder or chalk to cover the top of the frame. Then wipe off excess and hopefully the powder will settle into the stampings to find the vin.

The vin stamp should read 28R100001 for a Pontiac, 68, Arlington, V8, first car. A Chevy would start with a 1, Olds 3, and Buick 4.

Thanks John,

Your car looks awesome.

The VIN is not there, the rust is just too heavy.

Can I tell by the frame "part number" if it's a Pontiac frame (vs Chevy, Olds etc)?

That is a question I do not know the answer to but I'd love to find out. I could check the part numbers on some of my loose frames and see if they are the same.

On a rust (and undercoat) free car you can read the VIN with a dentist type mirror without removing the frame. rubbing a bit of baby powder on the area helps bring up the contrast.

Good question about if the frame model number offers any info about the car make, I would think not since the frame was the same on different A bodies but if the motor mounts are included in the frame assembly we might be lucky.

I will post the numbers on the frames I can read clearly along with the car info on this thread.

69 GTO convertible (Fremont car-early july 69 build date)

upper: 943347 S 213 (the S is in a circle and the tailpipe hanger bracket may be blocking the front part of the number)

lower: 6-13 01 XL

I will post others as I get to them

In that example, how do you read the date?
