Default Wiper Arm Rubs On The Hood

The driver side wiper on my '68 rubs against the back edge of the hood when it is turned on. Looks like it has been doing this for many years as there is a groove worn in the wiper arm. I have swapped the Lemans hood for a GTO hood and it still does this. Is there an adjustment to move the arm mounting post inward? The back edge of the hood lines up nicely with the fender chrome so I think the hood is ok. Thanks.

I ran into this on my 68, and had to "tweak" the mounting area for the wiper arm shaft. At some point, some metal work was done around the windhshield channel, and my guess is it got a little distorted?. I took a block of wood after removing the shaft assy and the bottom chrome trim, and a couple whacks put it back far enough to give me the clearance it needed.

it's in the whole car panel alignment. My 71 did that right from the factory and never had any body damage to tweak anything. Even though the hood lines up nice with the fenders, the fix may be lifting the doors, then lift the fenders to match the doors, then lift the hood to match the fenders to get yourself the clearance needed to clear it. Hence, let it rub and get yourself a spare hood molding and wiper arm to fix the alignment during the NEXT resto! It MAY be a loose fitting wiper arm that allows the spring to bulge it upwards off the windshield but that wasn't the case on mine.

Thanks for the replies. I have a replacement set of wiper arms and will keep an eye out for an extra piece of trim. I haven't really looked closely at the shaft position, but it doesn't seem to be bent and I think the arm is set on the shaft all the way, but it's worth another look. I hate to mess with my hood again as I've had it get stuck shut twice. What a *()&^()&% !! The second time i had to remove the valence, lower the bumper and release it from underneith. Guess I'm not alone on this one. I'll probably leave it alone for now since I rarely have to use the wipers anyway.

i think the wipers only go on 1 way its on or its not, possibly not down far enough. Are these recesssed wipers? possibly something go swapped at some point.. how is the rear alighnment of the hood? are your rear bumpers on the cowl gone or really worn?

Good thought on the rear bumpers. I'll check that tomorrow. The allignment looks good but it wouldn't take much for it to be rubbing. They are recessed wipers.

my 69 GTO only did that before I replaced the center rubber bumper on the cowl...no problem since then.

Thanks, I'll look for that and see if it needs replacing.

My 69 LeMans vert had that problem, rubbed on the hood rear molding.

I fixed it last year when car was apart for painting, car seems to have been built that way (doors a little too low relative to the rockers). A touch of raising a hair the doors-fenders-hood did the trick.

If your wiper arm is not rubbing on the lower windshield molding you can back space it by using washers between the wiper unit and the cowling
