Default Q-jet question slow reving engine.

Q-jet question here. I have 383 with a q-jet. My engine is slow to rev. but from 2800rpm on it's real crisp and fast reving. Do I have a rich condition of idle posably? Might I add my air bleeds have no effect on the idle, though it idles steady at about 600rpm.
Thanks,
Eric

Eric,

Do yourself a favor and purchase Cliff Ruggles new book on qudrajet carburetors for all your answers will be there, it is very good. You can ask Cliff directly if you go on line to his web site as well. It is Cliffs High Performance.com.

Is all your timing in by 2800, or before?

Is this while driving it or just revving the engine with the car setting? Also more info about your engine and drivetrain combo would be helpful....

I have Cliff Ruggles book but, there's not to much on diag. in it . Just how to rebuild modify and detailed descriptions of opperation. I know with this info I should have no problem setting the carb up but i'm missing something here. I have not driven the car to feel how the power comes on just reving the engine is all I've done. I set the total timing to 36 deg. @ 3,000rpm. My drivetrain: chevy 350 bored & stroked to 383 10.5-1cpr, 750cfm unmodified Q-jet, 110gph mech. holly fuel pump, edelbrock dual plain intake, port matched iron 461 chevy heads, stock exhaust manifolds, comp cams extream energy cam gross lift .477int. .480ext. duration @ .050 224int. 231ext. 110.0 lobe sepperation. roller rockers w/ hydraulic flat tppet lifters. For ignition I'm using the stock distributer with crans XRI points replacment module. Turbo 350 trans.

At higher RPM's, the secondaries are going to come in faster.
You've got to do your testing at the track or on the road, reving the engine under no load situation, makes it hard to diagnose whats going on.

If those are stock type valve springs on those 461 heads, I would think that ,#1 your very close to coil bind and or retainer to guide clearance problems with that .480" exh lift and that needs to be checked, and #2 which ties into #1 if those springs have more than 60k miles on them the motor will never rev like it should.

I should have detailed on the valve train more. The springs are the matched comp cam springs for the cam & the heads have been machined to accommmodate the higher lift and screw in studs. So I don't think it's coil bind or guid clearance. I agree I really need to drive it, But I think I will find it slugish at the bottom end.
Thanks for the info guys.

Eric
