Default BBC Questions

I've recently come into a lot of big block chevy stuff. 4 blocks, 3 sets of heads, a couple of cranks, a few intakes, etc. I don't really know the first thing about these engines, but I'd like to keep enough parts to maybe build an engine for my pickup someday, and sell the rest.

So... Where's a good place to look up the values of this stuff? Where can I look to see what's worth keeping and what I should get rid of?

Oh, and there was a nice pair of Pontiac 62s in with all the chevy stuff... Score!

The first thing you need to do is check the casting numbers and dates to see what you have. Here is a site that I use. http://www.nastyz28.com/bbcmenu.html Are any of the blocks 4 bolt main blocks? Any square port heads? Cast iron or aluminum intakes? Cast or forged cranks? If you can post a list of what you have I can help with values. You can email the list to me if you want at jfkheat@aol.com.

James, thanks for the response. I've looked up the casting numbers so I know what most of it came off of, but I still don't know what's good or not, or how much I should ask for it if I sell it.

All of the heads and intakes are oval port.

Here are the heads:

two 3935401 open 68-76 427T (T means truck?)
one 353049 open... I get different results for this casting number from different websites
one 343772 open... different results for this one also
two 3872702 (closed chamber) 1966 396/427 98.5cc

It looks like two heads with different casting numbers were used on the same engine. Is this a common chevy thing?

Crank:
3904815NF cast, 396/402?
There is another crank (forged) but I can't find a number on it.

Intakes:
Holley street dominator 300-3
GM intake 348218 (hard to read the number on this one), spreadbore
Weiand 8005
GM intake 340218

One of the blocks is a 454 (361959), I haven't dug the rest out of the garage well enough to get the casting numbers. I was told that one of them is a tall deck block, and I saw that it's a 4-bolt main. The rest are 2-bolt main.

There's also a 350 block, 3970010 and an Edelbrock SBC EGR manifold.

So is any of this stuff desirable?

If you got a tall deck it's probably a 366 or a 427. They are stump pullers. 427 are great stroker motors. I run 5 trucks with big block tall decks.

The truck heads don't have much value, maybe $50-75 per ser in good rebuildable condition. The 049 head is one of the more desirable oval port heads and would probably sell for $150 or so each in good rebuildable condition. The 772 head was mostly used on the tall deck truck engines and doesn't have much value. The 702 head is a good head that would be desirable to the guys doing the numbers matching restorations and is probably worth $150 or so each. There have been instances where Chevy used 2 different heads on the same engine but more than likely there was a repair made at the dealership while the car was still under warranty. Check the casting dates on the 2 heads and see how far apart they are.
I can't find any info on the cast crank number you have. If it is a 396/402 crank it will also work in the 427 engines. It's worth about $50-75 if it hasn't been turned much. The 454 took a different crank. 396/402/427 engines were internally balanced. 454s were externally balanced. Cranks for either engine have about the same value. The forged crank is worth about $200-250 if in good condition. The tall deck 366 and 427 truck engines had forged cranks that also work in the non truck engines.
Used aluminum oval port intakes usually sell for around $75-100 in good condition. Cast iron intakes are a hard sale because there were so many of them and shipping cost is too high. Usually you are lucky to get $25 each for them.
The 454 block is a good early years block. If it hasn't been bored over about .060, it should sell for $250-300 in good condition. All tall deck 427s were 4 bolt main blocks. They are good blocks for the guys building the big inch engines but they don't sell for much, maybe $100-150. The main caps are worth $75 or so.
Check the cast date on the 350 block. The earlier the date the better. Is it a 2 or 4 bolt main block? If it is a 4 bolt block cast in late 69 to early 70 it may be the best part you got. It would be a LT1 370 hp block that came in the 70 Z-28, LT1 Corvettes and the 70 Yenko Nova. If not, it's just another $100 350 block.
I hope this info helps.

Actually the best site to research castings is Mortec.com

http://www.mortec.com/

Hate to tell you this but a lot of those truck heads do have value as they are 107cc and such. Having raced BBC for 20 years and doing quite few builds and pump gas engines.

Some of the truck heads may very well be good for building the engines you mention but you still can't get much money out of they. The truck heads are designed for low rpm high torque engines. You have to put a lot on money in them to be a good head for race engines.

Thanks for all the advice James. I haven't had the time in the last few days to go look at the casting numbers on the rest of the blocks, but the the 350 block has a 2-bolt main.

I'll probably keep the 396 cranks, the 454 block, the matching pair of open chamber truck heads, the weiand manifold, and sell the rest. I've got a 74 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 that will need an engine in the next few years... Unless I can find a Pontiac 455 by that time, I may have to resort to building a 427 BBC for it.

With the parts you are keeping, you will have a good start on a nice 427. Good luck with whatever you do with the parts.
