Default Ok, who all has been running the newer forged cranks?

Just curious of how many of the forged cranks available in the past couple years are really being put to the test.

How many runs?

Any issues after running, or during the buildup?

Which version do you have?

From who?

I've done a couple 4.5" stroke combo's and the cranks have held up well. around 550-625 hp range, so not a hard testing on them.

I'll have some answers for you...................next year.

I bought a 3.25 main, 4.5 stroke from JBP, it is an Ohio "china" forging. I sent it to Carter Cryo first. Over the winter it will be sent to a crank shop to make sure everything is as it should be.

Then it will be going in my IA2 motor to make about 525 - 530 cubes, at about 900 HP.

We'll see how it holds up. I don't foresee any problems.

I'm running a forged 4.5 stroke 3" mains crank from JBP. I have only about 10 passes on it so far without incident. FWHP is approximately 825 or so in my 535

for the money, just buy one..i got a 3" main 4.21 crank from butler, and so far it has checked with no flaws..buy from a vendor with a good rep..my other chinese cranks have all held up..and i have been seeing nearly 40 year old bbc cranks cracking at todays power levels ..why run a stressed worn out part at double its factory design limit..

and what happened to the 57-64 pontiac mickey thompson magnesium center section i traded to rudy 25 years ago..do ya know?

I've been running the 4.21 stroke 3.25 main Ohio crank all sesaon. So far so good with 70 or so passes. The only problem was discussed here with the rod bearings needing to be chamfered to clear the large radius. They are offering a bearing now that is supposed to solve that problem.

Scott Rex posted that he was using a stroked All Pontiac Forged Crank
and had good luck with it some months ago. He is the fastest NA guy out there.

We put together a 505cid engine together about this time last year, with a forged offshore crankshaft. It spec'd out fine, accept for the snout, which was a couple ten thousanths oversize. We hone the timing gear and balancer till they slid in place, no other problems anyplace. The engine is making over 700hp, so far no problems anyplace.....Cliff

That's a FACT!

Damaged his big arm billet (~572 CID), put in a forged which I believe is still in @ ~ 1200+ HP (N/A)

Either way, if it could be hurt....Scott would have found out (ALWAYS PUSHING THE LIMIT, LOL!)

I dunno, but the coupe has a '57 Pontiac rear, and is supposed to have been switched to a 31 spline center. It obviously has new Dutchman axles and Hurst/Airheart disc brakes. I didn't notice the 3rd member being anything other than iron, but I'm now curious..

Good info guys. I'll need one in the near future, but have time to wait for the real world tests.

Nope not even 1 hp more infact the extra weight would just slow ya down lol, but i believe you can have what the other makes have and thats an affordable forged crank that will last under high stress for a long time and is durable in engines well over 1500hp so for 650$ and a questionable cast crank that may need extra $ in ballancing for not much more you can have a stronger, longer lasting race engine, Its not real hard to understand why you would ever need a cast crank for racing ever again! he** i have 2 one is 4.25 stroke and i am waiting on 4.00 stroke, anyways have fun i will!

I had to cut(.010) the mains on my 3.25 main Ohio crank since it was out of spec. Also had to machine the rods and chamfer the bearings due to the large radius on the rod journals. Other than that it was good. Hope to have it together for Zeek's fall event!

Thanks Tom.
This is from their site...

"4/22/08 Pontiac Rod Bearings - Clevite/Mahle has a new Pontiac rod bearing number CB758HXN that is .040" narrower. Works on cranks with bigger radius."
