Jay, I will lend you a lid if you want to test with it.

I bought a slightly taller K/N filter to get mine to clear the top of the carb. It was close but it worked. Bob and Dick saw the test(last june) and agreed the lid was not what the car wanted due to the shape. I made 2 pasess with the X stream lid and MPH was obviously off.

Wish I could help more...Nice car!

Jay: What part # for the K&N air filter?

Thanks Charles

Charles,

Shortly after that test I ebayed the X-stream lid and filter. Cant remember the part numbers but...this is what I did. Using this link to KN I just put in the round filter dimensions I needed to make that X stream top clear the carb and stay under the scoop.Only one would actually work for me. The '76 base looks deeper so my PN would prob not work.

Right now I just have a KN stock replacement filter.

Here is the link I used.

Default Thanks guys!

I was going to try an extreme airfilter lid also but now I'm going to save my money!

What I did was build a stretched hood scoop and it worked out pretty good.

When I swapped to an edelbrock performer intake the scoop sat a little lower than I wanted it to plus I wanted more air than just the K&N filter. I think the narrow
opening between the lid and base must work with extra air velocity like a cylinder head because mine ran worse with different combinations of aftermarket scoop/base mods.

I also hooked up all the intake duct work that goes behind the headlight, It must work
well because I always have leaves & bugs in my shaker. I have a screen over the scoop opening but not on the ductwork yet.

I made a mold off of a swap meet scoop & built a copy of a factory scoop.
Then stretched cut it apart and spaced the top up about 1" and narrowed the
top about 1" and gained about 12 square inches at the back of the opening.
Kinda like reverse chopping the top on a hot rod.
It looks stock as the proportions came out pretty good.

I'll take some better photos and post a link this weekend or on monday.
heres a side shot of it I took for something else I did.

Concerning the flat filter on the WFO setup, I have found that it is not necessary.
(At least not in my situation) I have a 1976 455 Trans Am with Performer RPM intake.
I use the WFO base with a short round filter and the original lid. All is well. In my situation, it would be beneficial to re-machine the top of the manifold so that it is
approx. 1/4" +or- lower at the front carb bolts. Over time, the hood/scoop fit was so tight that the front lip of the scoop broke off. This is not noticable as it is covered
by the rubber seal. It should be noted that this issue has nothing to do with the type
of filter (round or flat) used.

Sorry guys I had a bad weekend changing a fuel pump on my truck
so I did not get to take the scoop photos yet, I'll go out to the garage
this week and take photos and post them,

I had the same problem with the front of my shaker rubbing the hood too hard at the front and sitting too low at the rear. I wore out the rubber seal on the scoop.

I dont know why edelbrock cant get the carb flange machined at the
right angle for a pontiac. The intake I bought in the 1990s was ok,
then I bought one about 2 years ago and the angel was kinda off.

Later, Jason

If any one's still interested heres the link to the photos of my taller hood scoop.

The photos might be hard to see because its a dark blue car and the garage
was dark cause it was raining hard. But you should get the idea.

Nice work!
I'm always happy to see someone solve their own problems and look factory.
I'll likely be putting a Dude scoop on a glass hood to cover my Victor/Dominator and not bother with the air cleaner issues.
